Armor Crafting in Skyrim

Post » Mon Jun 20, 2011 1:28 pm

Please read before posting:

There have been plenty of posts concerning the ""possible" merging of the greaves and chest pieces into one slot. If you want to discuss/speculate about this, please do so elsewhere, thank you.

This post intention is to summarize all info we can collect about the new crafting system for Skyrim, and speculate about it in a constructive way (hopefully)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, picture this:

1.The developers have seen the tremendous creativity of the ES fans via the innumerable armor mods they created.

2.They are quite aware of the general "more slots=more customization=more fun" general opinion.

3.They have decided to create a new crafting mode that not only gives us a reason to collect those wolf/mammoth pelts and different ore types, but also allows endless customization options by combining pauldrons, skirts, chest pieces, greaves, belts, pelts...

What evidence do we have so far?

What features would you like to see?

So I know this is pretty far-fetched, but it would be awesome if we could "draw" the shape of our armor. To a certain extent, obviously.

Here is my speculation from a previous armour topic for possible amount of armour pieces.

13 types of ore and going by the theory of 5 armour pieces (It hasn't been confirmed yet that greaves or pauldrons aren't in the game so it could be 6 or 7) (and Orcish and Daedric aren't ore types they are varients of steel and Ebony)

13x5=65 (78 with Greaves- 91 with greaves and pauldrons)

Assuming that there are male and female varients of each armour 65x2=130 (182 with greaves and pauldrons)

Assuming there are at least a couple of varients within the armour itself 130x2=260 (example orchish is steel but there will also be regular steel armour) (364 with greaves and pauldrons)

Add on to that unique items/artifacts it could push it too over 300. (400 with... you get the jist of it...)

That doesn't take into acount the smithing or whether you are able to join different ore together example in the game demo we saw an Elven Glass Sword (In Oblivion it would have been one or the other, so it stands to reason that you can do the same with armour)

... Plus there are other types of armour leather which isn't an ore obvioulsy and hopefully they will bring back Bone and Amber armour types (both are natural resources and there is no reason why they can't be mined but are both obviously not ore)

Also what about the crafting of jewellery? This would be a cool ability too.

Can we paint our armor? Or dye the clothes?

I have two things I'd like, the first being the bare minimum.

1. Being able to dye items using dye made from foraged/hunted items.

2. Being able to use skins/pelts/ore/etc. foraged/hunted/mined/etc. to make custom items, NOT combining items together to make a premade piece of armor or a weapon with preset stats. At the least I'd like the stats/inherent enchantments to be variable. The best idea is a 3D modeling screen to put the items together, designating the type, handle/pointy end. Armor slot, pick bicep slot, 3D model comes up of the bicep and you rotate and position the item how it's worn. Once that is done the stats/enchantments are calculated and the item is made.

As there will be crafting, I believe there will be various "workbenches" in which certain items can be created.

I hope that for cloth, the workbench will be represented as a loom. A loom that can be used to create cloth from flax, silk, cotton, and wool, etc. I would like to have one in my "in-game" home.

I also agree with those who would like to see various dyes in the game.

Perhaps, throughout the summer, more will be revealed about the crafting workstations.

I just hope everything you can craft is unique to the crafting system. I don't want to see any crafting of elven, ebony, glass, or any other high level(already exists throughout the game world) weapons and armor.

I would love to see dragon bone/scale armors and weapons crafted from looting the corpse of a dragon. Yes I know they burst into flames, but their bones are still there and scales are actually bones too so leftover scales could still remain. Off topic note: I find frost dragons bursting into flames upon death to be strange. I also want to have the option to dye my gear different colors or paint logos/emblems on them; because of this, color dye should be something new for alchemy.

Why? A dragon's affinity to a particular element has nothing to do with how it's soul is absorbed.

Didn't we here some thing on painted armour early on? Maybe only for similar sets similar to the different guard uniforms ala oblivion.

It would be very cool to forge any ore into a particular style we like. For instance:

- There's Imperial Steel Armor, but not Imperial Adamantium Armor
- Could take Ada. Ore
- Forge it into Imperial Adamantium Armor

So has it been explained already that it's because of the Dovahkiin's dragon-soul absorbing ability that causes the dragons to die by fire? If it has been, than I can understand why dragons die like that in Skyrim. Unless some kind of explanation is presented by Bethesda on why all dragons burst into flames upon death, I find it odd to have a frost dragon dying in such a way... unless it was defeated by a powerful fire spell then yea I can see why. Until then, I'd rather have a frost dragon die by exploding into shards of ice or something.

They don't burn up until after they die. Fire is not the cause of death. They burn up while your absorbing their souls.

i have a feeling that when they mean crafting, they're talking about making the actual armor, not editing it. like having it be an alternative to looting it off someone or buying it.

Yes an armor thread that is positive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the crafting skills are going to be all those mods X 10.
Bethesda doesn't want to get showed up by amateurs. They learned from all the crafting mods from Oblivion, FO3 and FONV. There was a FONV mod that allowed you to make Gecko Leather Armor (of all types with different stats), Deathclaw armor... etc.. you could also make various metal armor with another mod. Then there are the crafting weapons mods.. They watch as they came out and picked what they liked... Which is Awesome and Intelligent!!!!!

They've taken steps to make characters more customizable, so armor might be given the same treatment.
I doubt it it would go any deeper than color changing, but it would be nice to have variant helms or pauldrons, like the Bonemold sets or the Daedric helms in Morrowind.

In a perfect world there'd be Heavy, Medium, and Light variants of every armor type, as well as the ability to make hide/scale/shell armor from every creature you fight.

Lets hope they go that way or at least get 80% of the way there. With the exception of Medium Armor.

Yeah, considering the emphasis Nords put on fashioning hide-armors in Bloodmoon.
I hope the devs put that in.
