Armor in Daggerfall

Post » Sat Mar 13, 2010 7:12 am

Im going to be playing a thief/burglar type character, so should I make it where plate armor isn't allowed for me? I understand that would really get rid of a lot of the gameplay, but it would seem wierd for me to be running around in full daedric :(

Armor has no effect on stealth or spellcasting, so from a gameplay standpoint it would be OK. Nixing plate armor will forbid you from getting over 80% the types of armor available. Leather and chain svck.

Then again, many people, myself included, have played characters who didn't wear any armor other than their stylish clothes, so do what you want ;)

Okay, in that case I'll use plate armor for my thief and name the class Marauder :)

Oh, by the way, a few questions so I don't make another thread.

1) Can you leave town and just explore in the open world, unlike FO1 and 2? Or is it a big map you mark a spot and travel there?
2) Can you wear cloaks, capes, cowls, or tunics over your armor? Like I wear full Elven and a black tunic or cape-like outfit over it.
3) Are there a set limit of guild quests or are there thousands of never ending generic guild quests as well as the main ones?

1) You can leave town and explore the open world, however there is not much to find out there but a vast and mostly uninhabited wilderness. Occasionally you may run across a solitary monster, and conceivably I suppose you could find a dungeon or a witch coven, but it really isn't advised to go running around the wilderness in search of such things when there are much more practical methods available. If you want to explore new dungeons, just get quests from the various guilds, noblemen, and merchants you can join and work for. Either that, or explore the dungeons you already know of; occasionally you will find a monster carrying a map that will reveal the location of a hitherto unknown dungeon to you.

Another thing about exploring the wilderness-this isn't like Oblivion or Morrowind where you can take ten steps to your left or ten steps to your right and find a dungeon to explore. The world of Daggerfall is incredibly vast, and if you go out in search of dungeons you are going to be disappointed because you might be searching for an hour or more. In fact, I'm not even sure that you can find dungeons by exploring the wilderness, because I've never tried. Wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't. So, there's no reason to explore the wilderness unless you need to find a witch's coven (and if so I really suggest you look online for detailed instructions on how to find them, because otherwise you are going to waste a considerable amount of time), or if you just want to walk around admiring the landscape and enjoying the wonderful Daggerfall music.

2) If I recall correctly, you can wear full platemail and then have a cloak or a cape over you, but I think the tunics go under your armor. Which kind of makes sense, because why in the world would you be wearing a tunic over your platemail? That's just dumb.

3) There are an unlimited number of quests that follow a finite number of templates, in addition to the main quest. For example, you may get a quest that tells you to take an alchemical ingredient to a merchant or other NPC in a certain building in a certain town. You can get this same quest numerous times, and each time it will be accompanied by the same dialogue, but it will nearly always be a different merchant or NPC, a different building, or a different town. Guild questgivers will give you an infinite number of quests, and you will always be able to find a merchant or nobleman somewhere who has a quest for you, so you don't have to worry about ever running out of things to do in this game. You can also refuse to do the generic quests, if you feel that from a roleplaying perspective your character should not do such a quest or if you just don't want to do that particular quest. I believe you incur a slight reputation penalty for refusing a quest, but it's easily gained back by doing some quests for that faction.

If I remember correctly, the default Burglar class is "Plate Armor Only" :)

I don't know about pictures, but there is a guy on youtube called Boilerplate who has a ton of Daggerfall videos that you can check out.

you can conceivably run into a dungeon or any other location on the main map but i've seen someone compute a very low %, something like .03% or less than 1% of the map has an actual 'locale', the rest is wilderness. i don't think they properly took account of the ocean which is another thing that i don't think people have calculated when they say the area of daggerfall's map is the size of great britain. it's probably less than that as far as the land portion goes because theres quite a bit of water and i don't think there are any locations out there except for your ship. you can also get maps off of mobs in the crypts and tombs which you start out knowing the location of, though some of these are unknown too when you start.

As Jammer1 stated, you can find both crypts and full dungeons by wandering the wilderness, but it is very hit-and-miss. I think a better way to explore is to fast travel to locations that are on your map that are only one day's worth of travel away from each other, finding something worthwhile to do at each stop.

For instance: say you are given a delivery quest to someone in a town that is 7 days away by fast travel. Instead of doing one fast travel (zap you are there), find a crypt that lies one day away in the same general direction. Clean that crypt out, do your practice routines, sleep to recover expended spell-points, etc. and repeat. If you can recognize the quests that don't require much time or out-of-town travel you can work cities, and more side-quests, into this routine.

Also, please note, if you refuse any quest besides the Main Quest ones, there is no detriment to your reputation in any way.

You're in for a treat with Daggerfall. It still is my favorite TES. Be ready for a lot of crashes though.... Save often.

OH and if you wait in stores till after they close you steal everything off the shelves =/ They don't kick you out lol. I used to get a cart and just load up stores full of merchandise.
