Armor/Gender dichotomy

Post » Tue Jun 21, 2011 2:16 am

So, one thing I really didn't like about Oblivion is that some equipment looked horrible when worn by female characters compared to males (Iron armor and chainmail armor come to mind), and also the fact that some equipment magically change from pants to dresses when worn by females.

I believe this should be resolved.

Mainly what think should be changed is for clothes to be labeled by what they are, rather than just a simple description (like coarse linens to coarse pants/dress) as I would like to be able to choose between the two when picking clothes for my female character (and males, i'm certainly not going to stop you guys from wearing dresses).

I don't put up much of an argument/resolution, but do you guys understand my issue/have any ideas?

I don't think worn items should look the same on females that it does on males. I thought the ebony and elven armors did this pretty well in Obliv. And yes they should make pants and skirts (assuming all clothes are seperate pieces) wearable by all genders.

Guess, items changes gender like in Oblivion, someone commented on this.
Downside of not changing is that you could not use equipment of opposite gender, it would also make it harder making random npc.
We have just seen two female armors, back of a lady watching a city and a portrait in front of a building and both looked very good.

It shouldn't be more revealing on woman than men. I noticed some of the armor in the stuff shown so far exposed the arms/thighs/chest of the men wearing it so if it's like that and equal I can understand, but none of the sixualization nonsense that many games do with skimpy women and fully armored men.

Right, like Ebony and Elven, they are full plate but are definitely designed differently for females. Same protection, all of the curves!

Yea, i want more realistic choices in armor/clothes as well. Oblivion did it pretty well, but like I stated, i hated iron and chainmail for females

Of course it should be different. Aside from the fact that realistically any suit of armor would have to be tailored specifically to it's wearer for it to be of any use, i can't really take Skyrim seriously if when donning the armor in the promos the female body gets 2 feet wider, taller and a lot more muscular for some reason.

As a fantasy (ie, not realistic mideval) game, some tittilation is obviously not out of the question, but that doesn't require any exposed flesh if it makes no sense to have it. http://tesnexus.com/downloads/images/13259-1190738334.jpg(the leather/chainmail combination especially), barring the somewhat exaggerated proportions, is pretty good if you ask me. Functional but 'interesting'.

Well i don't mean exactly the same, of course the equipment would have to be fitted to fit the characters, but take that picture you linked for instance, imo that would be a very bad thing for the game to have if iron armor for males was the same as it is in the vanilla game. To have males wear full suits of armor while females wear equipment like that (exposed midriff and legs and etc. would be sorta ... meh...

I don't dislike armors like that in all games (well I like JRPG's) but in Skyrim to me it would be completely out of place

EDIT: o, i think i did something to change the pic because i went back to look at it again and now it has chainmail under it, but my point still stands although a little less.

Probably my favorite example of "Doing it right", is Morrowind's Imperial Chainmail. Flattering, yet no less protective.

Where is the 'Meh' option in the poll?

If i looked up the right armor, then yes that would be a better chainmail set imo. Male & Female armors should look slightly different, but not to the point of being unbelievable (which is why I think regular chainmail and iron are bad on females (being so much more exposed and all).

I think my poll might be a little unclear :P

I'm sure you did, there's no less "Armor" in the Morrowind Chainmail for females, it's just a lot tighter, so it shows off the splendor that is the female form.

Wrong screenshot - I updated my post to reflect that. Changed the link to http://tesnexus.com/downloads/images/13259-1190738334.jpg, the variant i was talking about (leather/chainmail).

I think armour should look like it fits whoever's wearing it, but the style should be basically the same. Definitely NO chainmail bikinis, exagerrated boobs on the women etc. Nothing makes me want to put a game down faster than feeling like it's been designed with the 'male gaze' in mind.

right, i edited my post for a similar one, with a little more chainmail (was black instead of brown around the crotch). Anyways, I would consider that as a "Light Iron Armor" compared to the vanilla male's Heavy Iron Armor. If both males and females had lighter and heavier versions of an armor (like males getting a set like that sort of) then it would be cool. imo

It's probably worth mentioning that the Character Models in Oblivion were so ugly, they brought down the look of the armors as well.

I agree with this, for this game. Other games like JRPG's i don't mind it as much since everything is crazier in those games anyways. For Skyrim, I do want similar-in-style-and-plausible-defensive-capability-armor because this game seems like it should be taken more seriously and female warriors wearing basically nothing would be very out of place.

It doesn't really bother me as I always roll male characters. But my thinking is they should generally be the same for both sixes, but if anything maybe more fitted for the ladies.

I think the game could have both female and male armor, no matter what gender you are. As it should have the ugly never used skirts and the less ugly pants too.

I agree, but not to the point where there are no female armors at all (steel, i'm looking at you!).
