armor layer or "does this tie match my bulletproof vest?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 3:59 am

This thread is my musing on a idea I had about a mechanic we might see in Fallout 4, I apologize in advance if this has already been covered.

It started when I for the 5 millionth time watched through the E3 demos, suddenly Todds comment about layered armour, now Im sure lots of us mistook his words to mean the now more complex armor structure with individual arm slots etc. But then I realised, maybe thats not what he was talking about.

Exibit A: http://www.kotowari.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/f4armor.pngthe armor screen, notice he has the suit equiped as well as a leather armor set in inventory, but not equiped.

Exibit B: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CHjm9C_WsAAFs0A.png

now later we see the player has leather armor bits, yet he still has his suit!

This leads me to believe there will be a layer system where clothing and armor can coexist on our character. Clothing will be head gear and the neck down "sets" we been used in previous 3D Fallout games and armor will be the more complex "system" we saw in the armor screen.

Feel free to share your opinions, musings and dream armor/clothing combo.

Isn't this exactly what Todd Howard confirmed during the presentation?

Clothing is the under gear, armour is the over.

maybe its just me but if that was clear to everyone there be more talk about it on the forum, so I thought I muse and elaborate if anyone didnt catch the train yet.

Plus we need to have something besides the woes of a talking PC to talk about X3

What you're suggesting is exactly what Todd said during the presentation...

one sentence, which technically didnt cover everything I said, just the point that it be layered, which as I noted some might have missunderstood.

If you misunderstand what layered armour means, with what we were shown, you're reading too much into it.

I understood what he meant (particularly from the screenshots/video) but it DID open up some interesting new possibilities in my mind.

In Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, modders could create new outfits, some quite spectacular, but were always restricted to a fixed number of slots that those costume pieces could occupy. My current character in Fallout New Vegas has around eight pieces of 'armor' (no real armor value, most of it) from shoulder pads to leather straps across her midriff, to thigh straps, leg holsters, backpacks, and of course legs, torso, gloves, feet and head. In a way using these previously-unused (by the base game) equipment slots, modders have been allowing us to have Layered Armor for quite some time, now.

I hope that, in giving us vanilla-game layered armor slots, they have not stripped away the potential for modders to add gear to slots (like navel-rings, earrings, nose-rings, fingernail / claw replacements, etc). Of course, I suppose even if they DO use up all the equipment slots with ~available~ vanilla pieces you could always choose not to use them and instead of a backpack put on a pair of modded angel wings on your back instead. :)

I for one am excited for this feature! We haven't really had anything like this from Beth since Morrowind and I am glad to see a step towards that direction. I can hardly wait to see what kinds of combos we can come up with! Raider armor over formal wear? Combat armor over nothing?

I'd imagine it'd be a duster with shoulder pads tossed over top.

Or it'll just be a clothing piece incompatible with upper-body armour

yeah like the ranger riot gear armor. Morrowind had this, you could wear a robe over your armor with only your pauldrons showing. It would be nice to a have at least a couple of over coat type garments to wear over our armor.

Since most combat will be happening with guns I don't really care if there are armors, I just want some cool threads. Anything but PA and a kevlar west is going to be fairly useless in a gunfight and will only slow you down.

you should know better than that ,look at fallout 3 leather armor was fairly effective early on (till they released operation anchorage then well it was kinda moot)

That's what I'm saying, leather armor shouldn't really be doing anything to protect you from a gunshot. You might as well wear a nice suit and get about the same amount of protection.

leather armor itself would be pretty pointless again anybody with swords or daggers, it would help against animals bites.

Thin chainmail or other metal turns knives. Kevlar stop pistol bullets except the heavy bear-killer handguns and shotgun hits outside of close range.

Plates of ceramic or other advanced stuff stop rifle bullets from assault rifles and similar. Not the large caliber big game rounds used in sniper rifles and powerful hunting rifles.

You would need power armor for an full body plate protection.

0.5 BMG penetrates the sides of an battle taxi like stryker with an decent hit, against power armor you better hope it penetrate the backside and don't start to ricochet around inside it.

Note that this is real world, fallout will obiously work like this neither will it be an good idea :)

Personally I plan also use the new armour system to wear asymmetrical armour, tho practically stupid I find it aesthetically very pleasing.

Heavy leather offers good protection against knives, and lighter sword cuts (not thrusts). I know this from experience.

I wonder if the clothes will still grant perk/skill bonuses.

they only way it should would have to depend on what it's made out of (Deathclaw leather for instance)

During the e3 presentation when they're showing off the psychical pipboy, you can see that there are different kinds of combat armor in the menu (shadowed and fiberglass I believe) so its likely it will be customizable like power armor.
