Armor pieces or Outfits?

I have some awesome armor pieces (leg, arm armor etc.) but there're not that good light armors to wear them. Should I stick with light armors or should I use outfits?

Some outfits make no sense though. The bomber jacket outfit uses the BOS uniform as a base, so there would be no clipping issues with leg armor but they still don't let you equip leg armor, like how the game lets you equip "body armor" when you have the gunner outfit.

There's a mod that lets you place armor over any Undergarment but since that was never ~intended~ there are copious clipping issues... I can't wait for them to be able to make "invisible" armor mods so I can ~look~ like I want, and yet not sacrifice armor. Like, a postman's uniform (which may accept armor mods as far as I know: just an example)...

There are a few good outfits with 30, 45, or 70 def. last I had a medium upgraded heavy combat gave me 100 def. I'm using outfits until I can mod level 4 onto some armor. All my legendary armor are leather, metal and synth. I may try some full set of them when possible. Think I sold my vault 111, have a new vault 111 I picked up on the way out of the vault but not the original. The upgrades on the new 111 suit aren't great.
