Armor/Weapon Material Types You Want To See

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 8:56 am

Ok, I did a search and saw no poll like this, just a disclaimer. If it has been done, mods feel free to lock.

Other than Elven, Mithril and Glass, which are already confirmed in screenies, what types of exotic materials would you like to see return from Oblivion or Morrowind (or earlier games, but I haven't played them)?

Let's assume that leather, iron, steel, silver, etc are in by default and "Nordic" varieties

The Imperial Dragonscale armor from Morrowind was nice, though I figure it would just be called Dragonscale armor or Nordic Dragonscale armor.

There've been similar polls and you forgot a number but anyway I'd like to see -

Fur based armors - A given since it's Skyrim
All the standard racial styles - Dwemer, Orcish, Imperial, and so on
Glass, Ebony, & Daedric since they're staples
Dragon hide and/or scale based armors I'd assume will be in for obvious reasons
Some new stuff based on Skyrim creatures, lore, and so on.

Honestly think steel and iron are redundant, they're used in other armors and were never particularly exciting anyway.

Main thing I'd like to see though is less clunky armor designs, don't particularly like when armor looks too tank-like. So far I'm optimistic as it looks like they're going for more gritty realism more than over the top high fantasy for the overall visual style.

No armour tipes from the non-expanded Morrowind (chitin, dreugh...), thats stays in Morrowind. Armour from the expansion, like the Ice armour, well sure, why not?

Everything and more that aren't listed (if this is the case). We definitely need the ol' Chitin, Bonemold and Dreugh armours back, for example, and I don;t care if they're native to Morrowind. If they aren't going to add these because of their 'nativity', then they should definitely invent some armour native for Skyrim.
One of the main reasons why Oblivion svcked in comparison to Morrowind is because of the lack of armours and customisation as a result of this.

My main race is Dunmers, so I would like to see Indoril come back.

I say the more, the merrier. However, I would like to see material properties taken more into account in weapon construction. For example: Given that mithril and "glass" are very light materials, it is rather dumb to construct things like maces and warhammers of those materials. Likewise, iron has a hard time holding an edge, so we shouldn't be seeing iron katanas or scimitars.

Everything except those Morrowind-native armor and the Shivering Isles armor. It wouldn't make sense for any of those to be in Skyrim.

The more the merrier for me. My only hope is that I can precision place said items when I find myself a lair. With all Oblivion's objects subject to physics it was impossible to set up a display that wouldn't spontaneously explode if you so much as looked at it funny.

Not in appreciable quantities anyhow. I'm sure all the provinces trade with one another though. I think it would be cool finding rare (though maybe not mighty) weaponry and armor at main trading posts, or maybe in the guts of a shipwreck. Perhaps a shipment of Matze from Vvardenfell sinks off the coast and all the crew goes down with the ship... chitin weapons and all.

Man I loved the chitin concept.

I hope they roll back some of the changes they made to Dwemer and Glass: I liked Dwemer Armor better when it looked archaic and rusty rather than new and shiny, and while I can see how the all-color glass armor might have sounded like a good idea, I really hate the model that actually ended up in Oblivion. It's much too bulky and too gaudy. I really hope they start from scratch on the glass. Leather, Hide and Chainmail were fine, Mithril was good, Elven was excellent, Iron was decent, Steel and Daedric were good (though badly in need of female-specific chest pieces)... I think that covers all the basic OB ones.

As fond as I am of bonemold, there isn't much logical reason for it to be in Skyrim. Same for Indoril, Chitin, etc. Amber and Madness would be similarly out-of-place.

It goes without saying that Nordic-style metal armor can and must exist. If they decide to actually make good armor rare instead of automatically handing it to you when you reach the appropriate level (/bitterness) Dragonhide would make a cool end-game light armor alongside glass, and maybe Dragonbone for heavy. Who wouldn't want to be decked out in bones? Speaking of bones, didn't Morrowind have Nordic Trollbone items? I think so. That sounds badass too. Let's get some Trollbones down here.

If I remember correctly, the Stalhrim story was pretty specific to Solstheim, so I won't be upset if it doesn't appear but it would be pretty cool nonetheless.

I doubt we'll see adamantium; it only ever existed because Medium armor had no endgame options, and since medium armor obviously won't exist, the only reason to bring it back would be variety and aesthetics. These are good reasons to bring something back, but adamantium was a very plain-looking metal. Without a major redesign it won't add any variety and frankly it was pretty ugly. I say nay.

I really like the Imperial Legion armor in Oblivion, it has an odd balance of crudeness and style. I hope to see it again.
