Its funny I attacked some whiterun guards for fun back when I first started. The last one I killed I put an arrow in his knee before I ever heard a guard say that did a phew quests went back to whiterun....went to jail and as I was leaving a random guard said " I used to be an adveturer like you then I took an arrow in the knee" ?____? he survived......

And that's what happens.

An inside joke starts. It's really funny at first. And then, it stops being an inside joke because everyone everywhere starts using it without any idea of where it came from, or just use it in the least funny ways possible, and it ruins it for everyone. This is what we call a "meme."
