Arrow in the knee

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 9:22 am

Actually, the reference...
Guard used to be healthy fighter, enjoying life, then the arrow came and ruined that life.
Skyrim used to be nice game, not too broken, then the patch came and ruined that too.

See? :D

But really, it's about luck, I hear that quote about 15 times each time I enter town. It eventually crawls into your brain.

One of the main points is that there are so many of them!

I bet if you talk to every guard in windhelm, EVERY SINGLE ONE will have stopped adventuring because they took an arrow to the knee.

EVERYONE.

...
And it's always the knee.
...

And always an arrow.

Why not; I used to be a hobo* like you, but then I took a fireball to the face?

Or:

I used to be a hobo like you, but then I took an arrow in the arm?

I used to be a hobo like you, but then I decided to do something worthwhile with my life, like creating daedric weapons and making a fortune?

* D&D reference...

Its the fact that every Skyrim Guard was once an Adventurer until he took an Arrow in the knee and then became a Guard because of that which made it funny.
So getting an Arrow to the knee seems to have very predictable effects on Adventurers.
So which other things could an Arrow in the knee force you to do ?
I know, lame to explain such things, but its so overdone it cant become possibly more lame...

unless of course if it gets an arrow to the knee.

u dont have to get it. its silly, no fun at all. as if repeating something over and over and making it public would make it into some success comedy-wsie...

wtf, its [censored]... If what i understand is right, it has no reference other than a random comment a guard makes. Why would that catch on? I didn't even think twice after i heard it, only to come onto the forum and everyone and their grandma quoting it. I thought it was some sort of Arena/Daggerfall reference that i didn't remember.

Because I heard that phrase from the guards like 500 times, so it gets stuck in the head.

I've played over 100 hours and i've heard that joke countless times. I just have no idea why its so popular on this forum and on you tube. I don't understand the reference/joke.

You answered your own question.
It's ridiculous, catchy and the game spams it so much people just started making fun of it, it's extremely versatile in how it can be used/said.
So it became a meme, it's not rocket science.

I'm wondering why someone with an avatar of a character from "that" series would ever try to seriously anolyze such a thing.

Well thats odd, considering i didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary when i heard it. It was a recycled generic guard greeting. I can point to numerous such lines that are constantly repeated, and had been far more memorable than this.

I don't see how Suzumiya has anything to do with this..

I've heard it for the longest of time, and i have NO IDEA what the reference is to. I get the sweetroll, just not he arrow in the knee thing. x.x

It's not a reference to anything. It's just random NPC banter that's caught on with a lot of people.

But how many are so versatile in how they can be dropped into banter? Arrow to the knee and sweetroll theft are the best for that hands down. I dont think its so much the humour in the actual statement, just the fascination of seeing just how many situations it can be dropped in.

I'd logged plenty of hours in this game and not once heard this 'arrow to the knee' line ...

I thought the joke was the absurdity of so many guards using to be adventurers and all of them taking an arrow to the knee and becoming guards. Right?

Meme is certainly a bizarre form of humour because a joke can only really be funny once - the first time you hear it. Repeating a joke you've heard over and over isn't comedy, it's just spam.

It is a general film reference. "I used to be a soldier/officer (or whatever) like you, then I took a bullet to the knee" So then they become traffic duty/security guards ala the guards in skyrim.

There are actually a couple of fellows wandering around Skyrim who took swords to the chest. They are tougher than those wimpy guards.
