It's not a reference to anything really. Just something that guards utter constantly and can easily be reworded to fit a variety of situations, so the meme crowd has latched onto it.
I agree, it's unfunny and was old after day one. There are much better quotes and dialogue in the game but I guess it's good that they're not made memes out of, that would destroy them, like memes do with everything.

I agree! People should move on with the knee joke!
To OP: You should play more skyrim to catch on with these jokes!

I've played over 100 hours and i've heard that joke countless times. I just have no idea why its so popular on this forum and on you tube. I don't understand the reference/joke.

What's the matter?
... did someone steal your sweetroll?
...
Youtube is COMPLETELY infested with the "arrow in the knee" jokes.
Yeah i know, but everyone seems to act like its the greatest joke ever. I don't get it. x.x
Some people just are meme-proof. What a sad life that must be I think it got a lot of attention after the " I used to play Skyrim, but then I took a patch to the knee".

It's easy to remember because the guards say it so often, and because the guards say it so often ... it becomes a pain to hear it all of the time. Often when people are in pain, they joke about it... you know, to have the strength to survive. To joke about the arrow in the knee thing is therefore not just a joke... it's a matter of human survivalism at its very end.

wtf, its [censored]... If what i understand is right, it has no reference other than a random comment a guard makes. Why would that catch on? I didn't even think twice after i heard it, only to come onto the forum and everyone and their grandma quoting it. I thought it was some sort of Arena/Daggerfall reference that i didn't remember.
