Arrows

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:47 pm

So how come people are upset about arrows being few and far between and expensive?

It makes since, historically arrows are not cheap and it was not about shooting massive amounts of arrows to kill. It was about using one arrow to take down your target.

I really like the change, and can not wait for this game to come out.

I'm interested to see how it plays out. How often will I run out of arrows? Does that mean I'll need to make regular trips to town to purchase more? Will I need to be skilled with a melee weapon as backup?

In war, people had plentyof arrows. The armour was very hard to pierce, and arrows were normally deflected. They just used them en mass, and when they did hit, they didn't always kill either. Most of the time, they would just injure someone so they were unable (or at least dramatically less able) to fight, and to screw up the cavalry by killing or injuring their horses.

Oh. THANK YOU. Something that annoyed me to no end in Oblivion was that I never used more arrows than I gained.

I would like to see more types of arrows. I forget the name of them but there are these types of arrows with particularly thin and sharp heads that are particularly good at getting between rings in chainmail, and there's also a more blunt type that works well against plate armour by delivering blunt force.

I would love to be sneaking around a dungeon, seeing a respectable specimen of a bandit poor schmuck, carefully selecting an arrow and dropping the guy with a single shot.

What makes you think arrows will be "few and far between and expensive"? I didn't read that anywhere.

Boxing glove arrow anyone?

Different Rrow types is cool, I'm in favor of it. Plus, the tactical choices
Present with them...

(hypothetical situation)
"oh dear, a mudcrab has eaten my sheogorath shaped CHEESE! I had saved for a whole... Year. I believe this calls for... *fumbles around in quiver* MY FIRE ARROW AND MY FROST ARROWS POWER COMBINED!!! (captain planet?) *fires frost pierce arrow, then fires fire blunt arrow to break the mudcrab shell* it is now steamed and thats the way (uh huh uh huh) I like it!" (uh huh uh huh)

Anybody else agree?

I don't mind it. I think it's pretty good that they're going to be encouraging archer characters to make every shot count this time around.

Hopefully we'll be able to recover our arrows from bodies more often than in Oblivion to balance it out though.

I like the idea of arrows being more like 'snipers', getting 1 and two shot kills, waaaay more realistic. The only problem is, I don't like how they are balancing it. I still want to be able to play a ranger!

Anyways, overall, it's a positive change. :)

Not to mention that the change from 'pincushion barrage' to 'be efficient' is almost mandatory now that running backwards is no longer a viable option (you know... running backwards faster than the enemy can run and turning them into pincushions).
Sure, in historical and biological terms, unless its headshot or hits a vital organ, a single arrow is not enough to kill - but it certainly is enough to make someone unable to pursue you (getting shot by an arrow hurts dont'cha'know).
It's a change for the better, but yeah - if that enchantment skill is included, I hope to arceus that it will let us enchant arrows (quality and enchantment strength dependant on enchantment skill level? :unsure2: )

I'm in favor of anything, aside from button-mashing, that makes the game more difficult.

People are upset about this? Granted, I'm not around here too much, but my impression was that a lot of people were happy about the changes (making archery more efficient and more of a challenge at the same time).

I'm neutral about the change, although back pedaling and shooting lots of arrows in my enemies was my favourite tactic in Oblivion. It was fun, and it didn't bother me that it wasn't realistic at all. But now with being forced to switch from bow to melee is going to be cool too, but I still hope I can do many oneshot kills with the arrows. Oh, and I'm very very excited about flaming arrows, I thought I saw one in the artwork and I hope they will be available.

I always had 150+ arrows in my invent... they were in plentiful supply. I also had a mod which increased arrow speed by 125%, max distance by 125%, and damage by 25%.
I liked oblivion arrows anyway, without my mods. They should keep the oblivion arrows, although make them a little bit faster, and make bow damage more dependant on arrows rather than bow.
I mean, a bow's a bow, right?

Both are required to get a desired outcome. The arrow can be big and bulky for a though opponent but the bow is hard and the string pack a punch then you do more damage than if you shot the same arrow with a thin sleek bow with a lower quality string.

The arrows damage depends on what type of head it has, the shaft it's made of, poison and/or enchantment and the power behind it. The power comes directly from the bow and the strength of the user. If the bow if not up to spec, it snaps. Or you just can't put enough power behind it.

I'm not,

lets see

1 to 4 arrows to kill an enemy but arrows are actually expensive

OR

100 to 50000 arrows to kill a level 50 rat and arrows are still expensive

yah tough choice

Erm, nope. Straight, recurve, compound, the wood or materials, size, etc.

As long as I don't need to put 20-50 arrows into a target I'm good to go. If I can perch and shoot, all the better! Backpedaling at half-speed? Great!

Also, if there are more variety in the arrows themselves, as in what's found in the Thieve's Arsenal (knock-out gas, grease, dousing, etc.)

Can I point out that the king of England at the end of one of the crucades was killed by a French cook that randomly amied a crossbow?

im psyched for the new arrows thing. I always loved being a stealthy character. Having a limited amount of ammo, and only one chance to put down a target immensly adds to the immersive qualities of being an assassin-esque character. what fun was it trying to kill someone in oblivion with a bow knowing that you could shoot 90 arrows at them. It basically said "I am invincible." Not only does it add this level of realism, but it forces archer and assassin characters to resort to another weapon type once their ammo has diminished. being able to make the decision, "Am i going to take this guy out from afar, or can i get close enough to slit his throat," is probebly the most hardcoe thing ever.
