An article about level-scaling (25th August)

Post » Sat Aug 27, 2011 10:38 am

how did you even read that article anyways? its in foreign.

Personally I never trust the French.

I... I don't understand. You're taking the word of the French? The French? Over the words of the people that are making this game. The French? Really people.

Don't know what to say... Actually fixed level areas are a contrast with all their jabbering about "do whatever you want whenever ect etc.", but are what makes exploration actually immersive. Oblivion exploration was totally pointless.

Or maybe we are worrying for nothing about false information.

Why are they changing their mind this late?

As far as I am aware most people did not like level scaling (fans and reviewers). Did anyone actually asked for level scaling Oblivion style to be brought back? So why are they going back to it?

Anyway level scaling single handily ruined Oblivion for me. If its in, I won't be buying Skyrim on day one and will wait for some modders to fix it. I was being hyped about Skyrim and now they go and ruin it :(

^^

This is what I mean with "propagating false notion".

"changing their mind"? Can anyone find a piece of information coming from Beth that says that there would be no level scaling?

The pulse of this thread right now, for anyone who's not reading it entirely, is "OMG Skyrim will have the same level scaling as oblivion!!" which is a pretty bad and untrue "false notion" IMHO.

I can see Bethesda changing their minds and re-doing it if some kid complains that the game it too hard. If this is true and they did revert back I can finally say that I have absolutely no qualms about not buying this turd of a game.

Bethesda said there would be areas that are not level scaled like in Oblivion. Areas where the player can meet enemies far above his level. Like the Deathclaws in Fallout 3. The article says it will be more or less like Oblivion, with the enemy level always adjusted to the player's level (+/-2). No one said there would be no level scaling at all. And no one expected it. But what the article says is that all enemies are scaled to be around the player's level, which is what we're upset about.

Yes, and to a degree, confirmed. Bandits are only within certain levels, you don't get a tougher fire dragon, you get a frost dragon instead, and at higher character levels, where one would normally spawn there are now two, still lower level, wolves.

Well, if we temper these systems with dynamic group sizes, that actually might work a little better. At higher levels, you might only still deal with Level 5 wolves, but you may find larger wolfpacks of them. as well.

"Our last glimpse of the future we bomb Bethesda confirms Skyrim always seems on track to replace Oblivion in the hearts of players."

So much for the chrome translator.

It would be nice if there were a few out of the way zones with fixed high level enemies. Not like Fallout New Vegas though where the game pretty much guides you on rails from A to B to C with high level enemies galore.

Overall though I much prefer level scaling to fixed enemies in fixed locations.

They both have pros and cons and I feel the cons of fixed enemies in fixed locations are much worse than the cons of level scaling (when both are done properly).

I have read few interviews they did during E3 where they explicitly said areas will have certain levels. So I am not just following the crowd here...

VERY disappointing, if this is true.

Level-scaling completely ruins the sense of danger which should exist in an open-world game. I want there to be areas with enemies far stronger than I am at the start of the game.

- It adds to the believeability of the world
- It makes exploration more fun and exciting
- It gives me something to work towards

Wow. So they lied.?

Or the article is wrong? Or they changed their design choice? Lying would be saying that it's like Fallout 3 all the way up to November and then the final game isn't like that.

I doubt they would just lie about something like that.

changing the design choice... I think saying 'we made it better', then not making it better and not talking about it is not 'changing the design choice'

I hope the article is wrong.

Its less than 80 days for release and if they are making design changes this late, then Akatosh help us all!

Or the article is right, they didn't lie, and all they ever said was there are easier and harder areas, and the scaling is more like fallout than Oblivion. I see that still, no one has linked to an article or interview where anyone from Beth, as opposed to some on this forum presenting their wishes as facts, said that dungeons are locked within certain level ranges.
