Artifacts (blades, armor, amulets, staves, rings...)

Post » Tue Jan 18, 2011 2:41 am

I went through the list of the artifacts. They all like to disappear and/or choose their own master. But I noticed that none of them is an axe. Am I right in this or is there an axe artifact somwhere? I'm asking this for writing purposes.

That axe cannot be used, as far as I know.

From Dictionary.com:
ARTIFACT: a handmade object, as a tool, or the remains of one, as a shard of pottery, characteristic of an earlier time or cultural stage

Since Hrothmund's Axe was a weapon used in earlier times and is now in disuse, it classifies as an artifact. It is not Daedric or usable, true, but the OP did not ask for something Daedric or usable.

The fact that he made the statement "they all seem to disappear and/or choose their own master" automatically shows that he is referring to artifacts in the list made in the "Artifacts of Tamriel" book, all of which are usable.

Using your definition, all Dwemer weapons (axes included) are artifacts; thus, the OP question is unnecessary..

Would the Cleaver of St. Felms do? It isn't a daedric artifact, though.

Gee, I never thought of that...

I guess there really aren't any legendary, ancient artifacts that are axes.

There's also Stormkiss, Widowmaker, and Cloudcleaver, although they're not exactly "artifacts".

http://www.mjpeak.com/bp/movies/vb25_excalibur_final_sword.jpg evokes something very different from http://bosstoolsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/axe.jpg, so I suppose it's not too surprising.

True, but an axe still evokes more than a hammer--an lo, we have Volendrung. No, someone just needs to convince Mehrunes to share that big axe he's always carrying around. Selfish bastard.

I really wouldn't have thought so. I personally can't think of any particularly legendary axes, yet ask me to name any other mythological weapon and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mjollnir would be amongst the first few that I'd name.

I suppose. But what can I say, I'm an axe-man. My favorite hand tool.

The story of some artifacts vanishing and finding new masters does apply, mainly to Daedric things.

I think Wabbajack in particular.

Boethiah is also depicted as carrying and axe, isn't he/she?

There's also Shadowrend, but not only is it leveled, but it's not exactly an item of legend either. Nor is it always an axe.

These are either axes from Daggerfall or Arena (which I haven't played) or they are local artifacts from Morrowind which also does not apply well in my story.

So. My next question: who can give me some good ideas about the names and properties of Mehrunes' or Boethiah's axe? If there is some other Daedric Prince out there who has an axe they are welcome too.

Well the traditional artifact of Mehrunes is his Razor, and the artifact of Boethiah was ebony mail in Daggerfall, and Goldbrand in Morrowind, but I know nothing of them wielding axes (except in some pictures-statues) officially. Unofficially, they look big and powerful.

I believe that in Oblivion, Mehrunes Dagon has an axe when he's on his rampage in the Imperial City.

He does --->http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/oblivion/images/thumb/6/66/MehrunesDagon.jpg/180px-MehrunesDagon.jpg

Never heard any lore on it though.

Since it's an axe that you're looking to make up, you could pin it on Skyrim and use a Norse name. Here's a link to a rather large Norse dictionary: http://www.yorku.ca/inpar/language/English-Old_Norse.pdf. You can search for a word you want, or multiple words and combine them.

Leg Biter? Head-cleaver? Bloodletter? How about Bone-splitter? Or the nice, simple Carnage? My personal favourite is for Head-cleaver, but [insert name]'s Axe can also work. Like Boethiah's Axe, Mehrune's Axe, Hrothgar's Axe, etc.
The name could also be dependent on the type of axe; francisca, bearded, double-bladed, battle or war, valaska, pole axe. Would at least give us more non-sword options to play around with.
