[Wip] Ascadian Isle Overhaul

Post » Wed Dec 30, 2009 7:12 am

Ill write a real description when I get outta work. This will overhaul the Ascadian Isles region, cities, textures, and a few models. It will be built with keeping the Morrowind feel, but more geared towards the concept art.

The trees that will be used in the overhaul were just released as a replacer today. I was tired of them sitting there, fearing Id never get the whole thing released so I figured atleast those can be made public =-).

Are these using the "billboard leaves" akin to what Starwarsguy and Vality have created? Or is it more akin to the traditional Morrowind style? If the latter, I'm looking forward to it. My computer can't handle billboard trees en masse, but yours look amazing.

Actually, billboarded trees eat up less FPS than the original trees in Morrowind. I don't completely remember the mechanics of it, but the gist of it is that because you have the planes (each of which is obviously not very high-poly) rotating to face the player, instead of having a bunch of separately modeled leaves, each tree causes less of an FPS hit. That's why Vality's tree mods don't cause much of an FPS hit even though he's adding a huge amount of new statics. Speaking from experience, if you try to enable that plugin with the original trees, you get an average FPS of poop.

EDIT: Also, yes, I'm fairly certain that those are billboarded.

A few more of Vivec. They may be dark on som monitors, I shot them at night because I was fond of the lighting.

Yes, these are billboard trees. Im trying to optimize the polygons as much as possible. I can easily simplify the mesh to much lower qulaity and release that as a add-on, but as its been pointed out the trees wont casue a noticable fps hit

Nice!.
This looks like it might even compliment my Molag Mar WIP. :) Have we been having the same dreams or something?
I have done some similar things to the cantons, albeit not as grand since Molag Mar is not as big/prosperous/populated.

Maybe further pictures will explain this, but how did you create that custom canton? I see that you placed normal Velothi buildings in the sides, but what did you do for that base? It's really quite interesting.

The entire thing was made from scratch. Thats the third generation model, really. It was inspired from this http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.uesp.net/morrow/preview/viveccityt.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.uesp.net/morrow/preview/morart.shtml&usg=__yiBPKBFEUXV1vUXdDBSBH70abDk=&h=89&w=123&sz=4&hl=en&start=4&tbnid=IzwHy5b4SkT5SM:&tbnh=64&tbnw=89&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dvivec%2Bconcept%2Bart%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26rlz%3D1B3MOZA_enUS341US341

Wow, zackg! I know you would fix the lighting issues of Vivec, but boy, I didn't expect that kind of effort.

Thank you. :hugs:

This is still being worked on but now its part of a much larger project. This part, the Ascadian Isles, has really regressed a tad if anything. Right now Im working on a Ashlands overhaul...

I don't know what all those dead trees do to the frame-rates, but the burned-out forest look is amazingly creepy. I rather like it.
