ASMR

Greetings, beautiful people. I'm amazed that this hasn't been brought up on the forums here yet, or at least not from what I've seen. I guess I'll introduce this perceptual phenomenon to you because you're too lazy to look it up yourselves.

ASMR (short for Autonomous sensory meridian response) is a pleasant "tingling" sensation you can feel in your head, scalp, back, et cetera in response to different stimuli, like receiving personal attention, watching others complete tasks, or by listening to a soothing voice. What triggers it varies from individual to individual so it could be anything. I'm sure that at least a few of you have experienced it already, although you may not have been aware of what it's called or that other people experiences it as well. As someone who often struggles with insomnia, anxiety and stress, I find it to be a great aid for relaxation and sleep. YouTube has its own ever-growing community of ASMR people who role-play events and situations that tend to trigger the response, like receiving a haircut, visiting the doctor's office, et cetera, so give it a try if this sounds cool or interesting to you.

Anyway, I'm curious to know if there are any others here who are familiar with it, and I'd encourage those who are not to check it out on YouTube or something. ASMR is a mystery so it doesn't work on everyone, but I'd say give it a go.

And just to clarify, it's not something that is associated with sixual arousal.

I had heard about this on the radio a few weeks ago. There are a lot of things that trigger this response in me. It's very relaxing and tends to put me to sleep. If my wife rubs the back of my head or my daughter rubs my arm I immediately start to fall asleep. I also enjoy the sounds of certain voices especially how they say their "C"s and "K"s; I'll doze off listening to certain people talk because of this. It's not that they bore me I just find their voices soothing. It also doesn't matter if it's a woman or man talking, if they have the proper tone it relaxes me and I fall asleep; though it happens more often with women.

I guess I get it like any other sap here? Music, good stuff, etc.

Sometimes I get it while I'm going to sleep. It's like a spider bit me and I start going numb/ASMRing and get paralyzed.

One guaranteed physical way is to pet me. I like being petted or having my hair ruffled. I love it, but no one does it to me :S

I got it a bit when I went to sleep the night I came out of the closet. Felt pretty good.

Yeah, I feel the same way by listening to certain voices. And as for physical stimuli, I remember when I was a kid and we used to "draw" stuff on each other's backs and we'd guess what they were drawing, and that always gave me tingles.

Hmm, I'm not sure if that's necessarily ASMR, but I could be wrong. And I'd pet you any day.

Yes, it's just what I tried to describe in the OP. You totally got it.

I only have a limited understanding of this sensation, but I think it's overrated. It doesn't feel too great.
