Assemanu Shrine is still bugged?

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 5:43 am

It's been well know for a long time that http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Assemanu has that problem where you can be trapped in the Shrine cell because the doors are locked... and cannot be opened by Lockpicks or Magic.
From the Wiki:
The Inner Shrine is locked from the inside, it requires a key to open the doors - and the key is on the body of a dead Ordinator in the cave entry area, up a ramp in the north end.
To get around this trap, use a Recall, Almsivi or Divine Intervention to get out of the central shrine.

I thought the MPP fixed this long ago, but apparently not.

I think this is a bug, for two reasons:
- A Player should always have the option to get out, instead of strictly relying on a Spell or Scroll. (my Lvl 5 warrior just got trapped there forever... I had to use the console because I don't know magic or own scrolls)
- It's near Seyda Neen, which makes it even more likely that a new Player would not be prepared to teleport out.

If you don't get the key from the dead Ordinator, you are trapped.
This is because the Lock Level for both doors exiting the Shrine cell is set at 0... which is a big mistake on Bethesda's part.
Suggestion: Set the Lock Level at 10-15, that way even a Lvl 1 character has a chance to get out with a lockpick, even if they never grabbed the key. Frustration would be better than "this dungeon is broken!"

I can't believe this hasn't been fixed yet :P
BTB... can you add that to you next update? Or whoever has decided to continue the MPP. (I forget who is attempting this, since quorn resigned)

edit: Current MPP version, 1.6.5 BTB edit

Huh, I'd never noticed that. I think you're wrong about one thing though, Level 0 locks can be opened by magic (just tested).

Still, it's almost certainly a mistake. Since it's not clear what the original intent was, IMHO either the doors shouldn't be locked at all on the inside, or the lock level should be set to match the outside doors and a key (or perhaps an open door scroll) should be placed somewhere in the shrine cell.

Oh, right.
But I guess what I meant was that you need magic (scrolls or spells) to teleport out of the cell.

Still very limiting.

My guess is that Bethesda may have done a mistake here because it make sense if you switch the sides of that door, so you must have a key before you can go through that door and you must either lockpick or use a spell to unlock the door if you're trapped so to speak.

That'd be me attempting to continue it properly, and don't worry, I've already noted that. Not sure that I agree with the lock level though. Really, they shouldn't be locked from the inside since unlocking them from the outside is the only way to get in without cheating. Plus, it just doesn't make any sense that it locks again. If they were to need a lock level, it should match that of the other side, just as ManaUser said. I'd be against adding an item to the cell though. It's always bothered me that all those skeletons in shipwrecks have water breathing potions placed there for your convenience. Seems like many of them wouldn't be dead if they had used it. Anyway, I've seen a few doors with differing lock levels on either side, and it seems strange to me.

I'm still following the current bug report thread, so that will probably be the best place to note further stuff, since I generally do not follow the forums very regularly. I don't even know why I am here; I should be on my way to the College of Winterhold. ;)

I agree. Just keep the doors completely unlocked from the Shrine cell. The key should only be needed to enter/exit from one door maybe... otherwise should be totally unrestricted.

I tried to find the thread. Do you happen to have a link?
I couldn't find it through Search.
Because I actually do have another bug to report.

It does appear in the vanilla game, so you must just have grabbed the key first

Or if you played a habitual magic user (like I did) you might have just whipped out your unlock spell (or item) without even noting there was anything odd about the door.
