Re-assign perk points?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:25 pm

Maybe that would be better then if you can pick two every level so that way you can get more.

They've already made leveling faster, so we'll acquire perks at a fast rate anyway.

In oblivion you could master everything, everyone hated that I guess. Now your wanting to be able to be the master of everything, but not at the same time, just when it's convienant?

Maybe games should have things called "choices", and you "choose" something, and stick with it. Or you could just pick some perks for a Theif, play the theives guild, magically forget that stuff and become a Mage, then later magically become a warrior! That doesn't sound [censored] or anything!? Come on!

I've played borderlands and you can do this, but there isn't nearly that many perks or what ever they are called, and it works for that game. Skyrim isn't Borderlands, and you should play a character, that evolves naturally through your play style. Being able to switch perks=no challenge what so ever. Oh look this guy is week vs fire, but I'm a thief! Hold on....... Ta da! I'm a Mage now! Win fight, back to my thief.... for now.

Well maybe you only plan on one playthrough? You want to see everything the game has, right? Well as the T man says, "you can have anything you want, but you can't have it all", or something to that effect. This game is designed to be that way, meaning you can't do everything. If you could, then they didn't do their job. Get this idea out of your head! Or play on the pc, and I'm sure console commands can give you what you want(changing perks/skills). Oh ya, so instead of learning skills by doing you'd want to learn any skill, take it's skill points, put them into a completely different skill, then take your perks and repick them in the skill you didn't actually learn? Just so you can be anything, at anytime, for whatever reason. No thanks.

but BOotySweat you didn't have to do that in Oblivion so I don't think you should have to in Skyrim cuz it's probly less fun if you can't do everything.

This is Skyrim, not an Oblivion clone.

Well I think it would be better if you could end up with every perk instead of having to change them but if you can't I just thought it would probly be a good idea if you can change them. I have to go now though so I can't really talk about it anymore but I hope I explained how I mean it more now. Later.

I'm serious I just don't explain things to good sometimes. You know in Oblivion you could get all your skills really high all with one guy right? Well if in Skyrim you get good at things with your perks then you can't do that. So if you can't do that I just think you should be able to change them after so then it's kind of the same thing. I think that makes more sense now?

I understand, but I disagree with the basic idea. I thought it was silly that one character in Oblivion could become all-powerful -- it took any real feeling of consequence out of the game. My star sign, class, major and minor skills all didn't matter by level fifteen. I'd rather be stuck with the character I developed.
Plus, how would they balance it out? If you could just reset your perks any time you wanted, what would be the point of picking them? Why not just get all of them at once? And any perks with a skill threshold would still be inaccessible to your warrior-turned-mage.

I guess it would be okay if it was very, very difficult, as in a three-hour quest line. But honestly, starting a new character should be the consequence for developing a character without any forethought and then deciding you don't like him or her.

So you want Skyrim to be a bad game just because Oblivion was too? Being able to become good at everything is very poor design when it comes to character development. Just because one game svcked in that area doesn't mean the sequel has to as well. If you don't want to make decisions about how you want to play the game, then maybe you should just stick with some first person shooter title.

Only in a very well designed limited way. I think being 100% stuck with the perks you pick is a bad choice in a way. But I also don't want you to be able to just throw around perk points like candy. I think a very limited and well done way would be best for everyone.

280+ actually. And a character would be grossly overpowered if they were able to get them all.

Remember, a lot of these perks are going to be skill based. Perk x might need a skill level of 50. So in order to move these perks around your going to have to move some skill points too, or just pick lower tier perks. The whole leveling system has been designed on the idea that we naturally level through the skills that we use the most. No more classes, right? Then we can only pick one perk per level in any skill that we increased to earn said level. So we are forced to make hard choices. Its half the fun. IMO, and is how they are designing the game. Having the ability to move stuff at will negates this whole leveling process. They might as well dump it, give us all 50 perks to choose, dump skills as we know them too. Then allow us to switch perks whenever. This idea breaks levelings core design.

250+ is technically 280+, but yes I agree with you completely.

Not even then. If I go to university and get a degree in history, then decide that I want to switch to biology, does my knowledge base suddenly change so that all that time I've already devoted gives me an instantaneous understanding of my new field? No, I have to go back to the beginning, all the while still retaining my old historical knowledge. Why should it work any differently in a game? That's just opening the door to munchkin builds. If you make a decision with your character, you should have to stick with it.

This is an idea that would only sound good to a kid. Kids have been spoon fed these types of games where the only choice is everything. They want it all, and they want it now. If they get turned off by sticking to choices, well they are gonna have themselves a wake up call when they grow up! No repicks in the game of life!

Older people who like this idea are just those same kids, grown up :)

Should we be able to re-assign our perk points?

I think judging by the wording of this quote, you might be able to re-assign your perks.

- Will the reducing the attributes make it easier to combine, for example, sword fighting with magic? Is it easier to be a hybrid?

- It's up to you! You will start out with equal points, but to upgrade the various skills via the new system, you need to have a certain number of points in the skill. If you want the most awesome perks, you need to invest in that skill. What our system does first and foremost is let you change your mind.

Tell me about it. I've bet on the wrong horse more than a few times in my life, and there's no going back to correct my mistakes. I have to live with the consequences of my decisions. I don't see why it should be any different in a role playing game. You are supposed to be the character you play, so you better make sure that's how you actually want him/her to be. If it turns out that it's not really what you had in mind, or you want to try something different, you can always start again.

That's not what that means at all. What he's saying that if you spend time being a fighter type and decide you want to try some magic, you can start casting spells and gaining some experience in that area. You'll still have those combat skills and perks though, you'll just gain new magic ones on top of those. You simply aren't going to be forced into one style of combat or another, you can try different approaches. But if you leave things too late though, you're not going to be all that effective in your new chosen path compared to your old one.

Being able to do that really takes away the weight of the decisions you make concerning your character development, so I wouldn't want it.

Hell no, that's a horrible idea.

What would be the point of making a new character then?

Hey don't want to go off topic, but I PM'd you like you asked, did you get it?

I think Beth has made some nice choices with the leveling system and opened it up for true customization. Resetting everything defeats the purpose.

The biggest problem with respecing perks is that you would then be able to change your perks depending on your QUEST. Like switching to magic-based perks when you want to do mage guild missions, then respec to sneaking skills when you want to run thieves guild missions afterwards.

This is just a little bit too outrageous for me. You are the dovahkiin, you are not a Shape-shifter.

I too, agree wholeheartedly. The whole point of limited perk selection is to encourage replay and allow each character to develop its own individuality.

I do not think we should ever have the ability to reassign all of our perks. However, considering perks will be capped at 50, I think it wouldn't be such a bad idea if every level after 50 you could forget a single perk and replace it with a different one.

This allows a dedicated player to get rid of a few perks that they end up not really wanting, while still having the importance of thinking out your character build still there.

So... we could change our perks at will to suit the situation? Great, I could be a fighter one minute, then become a master thief just in time to pick some difficult locks ,and then back to a fighter.

Why not just give every character maximum skill in everything straight off?
