Assistance with Mods in Steam PLEASE!

Hi all,

I have run into a little bit of a problem when trying to Mod my Fallout NV, basically the Date files located at C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Data such as; Meshes, Textures etc. are in BSA format in the and thus I cannot easily add any third party meshes/textures.
I had a quick look at packing and unpacking the BSA files using FO3Edit (Not sure if the NV version is called the same, but I used the right one), however I couldn't seem to get my head around the process, it is rather long to unpack the current BSA's and then repack them every time I want to add a Mod, I had no success with this method anyway.

So what I am am basically asking is there anyway to convert the BSA files into folders? or is there a more effective way of installing Mods when this is the case? Also does anybody know why they are in BSA format in the first place, at first I thought it may be Steam specific but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Much appreciated,

Regards

Billy Jay

I have no clue where you got this idea, but you don't need to unpack and repack the .bsa files in order to instal mods. The game will recognize folder structures outside of .bsa's just fine.

You just need to unpack the contents of a mod into the data folder with the directory structure intact. Then you need to either enable BSA Redirection in Fallout Mod Manager or enable ArchiveInvalidation in Wrye Flash. To make your life easier you can just use either http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=35003 or http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=36901 to manage your mods.

Thanks for the help, I had not realised that the folder structure would be recognised (I was trying to merge the meshes/textures with the BSA), and completely overlooked enableing ArchiveInvalidation (I remember doing this with Fallout 3). Again cheers, I just got thrown off by the BSA files of which I hadn't come accross till now.

Yes, it's the same system because it is the same engine. If a file is replacing a file included the game with invalidate older files enabled, the game will use the loose file over the one in the BSA. So long as the file respects the directory structure in the BSA then this will work. If you modified any of the game's BSA files then you should replace them with the originals to prevent any potential problems.
