Who cares. We're still mourning over the astroid that destroyed Morrowind ; _ ;

Its about the only thing that makes sense. Although we have a difficult time defining short periods fo time back then (like a specific 10 to 100 year period where the weather would see the most change from this) a radical shift in climate is the best explanation for this large die off. We had a mini ice age after Krakatoa but that was no near the size of this impact or would have put as much dust/debris in the air. However, that dropped global temps about 1 or 2 degrees. This impact is said to have caused a 10 to 15 degree drop in global temps immediately after.

Funny thing, since the rise of the civilization of man, more than half the species have died off. Whether that is on us or it would have happened eventually anyway is a different discussion. However 65 Million years into our future, they will not be able to discern between the year 2000 and the year 4000 BC either. And, if most or all of the evidence of man is erased by that time, whoever is looking for a reason will have a much more difficult time figuring that out. At least we have an impact crater and debris plumes to examine

I thought the smoking gun was found years and years ago. Anyways, at least it's official now.

I mean WAT. Dinosaurs aren't real. Just like the moon landing.

If we wipe ourselves out with something like an antimatter bomb, I think the crater will be plenty big enough, even if future civilizations will not be able to specifically tell what caused it.

Birds are dinosaurs. Or at least descended from certain dino species.

I've always thought this theory was the correct one.

Also, from the comments:

Here we go again. This is science at its worst. Because the dinosaurs were big (well, most of them), everyone has this fixation that it took something big to wipe them out

Hahahaha. A random internet idiot saying 'science at its worst!'. Yeah, you're better than 41 scientists combined!

The asteroid is thought to have hit Earth with a force a billion times more powerful than the atomic bomb at Hiroshima.

That's scary. And yet that asteroid was too small to cause any significant changes to earth's orbit around sun.

Edit: Here's something for you to waste time with, a calculator for asteroid impact effects: http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/

I'm sorry Pterosaurs, Tyrannosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Triceratops and Torosaurus, large numbers of marine creatures and most other species, but it was not me, it was the beans I had for tea.

I can't say I'm surprised, the asteroid theory always did seem pretty plausible to me, I guess now it's considered official, though.

I think humans would survive it, which shows our intelligence.

Um, actually, you've got it backwards:

We would survive it, because we are intellligent.

Archaeopteryx FTW. Anyways, I'm pretty sure we would survive. Instincts are bound to kick in and while we may kill each other off we would still be here.

There is no difference. If you are going to linguistically anolyze what I am going to say, then be on your way. I really don't care about causation or implication or entailment.

Surviving shows we are smart.
We survive because we are smart.

There is no difference.

Surviving shows we are smart.

That's not true, though. Cockroaches would most likely survive too, doesn't mean they are smart (which they aren't).

Bacteria would survive, too.

If something survives a disaster such as an impact by a huge asteroid, that doesn't imply that that something is smart/intelligent. If something is intelligent enough, though, that does imply that that something is (very likely) going to survive.

A giant asteroid smashing into Earth is the only plausible explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs, a global scientific team said on Thursday, hoping to settle a row that has divided experts for decades.

Science FAIL.

Just because you can't think of some other way for it to happen doesn't mean your conclusion is factual.

In terms of humans and nothing else. Some people would be lucky to survive, but as a species, surviving would show our intelligence.

...that's how science works, dude.
