ASVAB

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 1:37 am

For those who have taken the ASVAB post your scores here. I was wondering if I should join the military so I took the ASVAB about 6 months ago and got an 88 since then I desided not to join but its still good for up to two years. I pretty much consider it my backup plan incase everything in life just fails (which it looks like since I don't have a job and doesn't look to be getting one anytime soon). I would love to serve my country but I'm putting it off I'm just a little scared of giveing that commitment right this second. So discuss what yall's ASVAB scores are mine was an 88 over all. my highest score was in science where I scored an 98.

98 overall. Currently enlisted in the Navy under the NNPTC, and I highly recommend it. Best decision I ever made, as the Navy covers everything. Education, money, food, healthcare, the works. Volunteer for subs and you'll get extra sub pay, on top of extra nuke pay, on top of extra sea pay, on top of base pay.

With an 88 you could totally make it into the nuke program. It's one of the few ratings that the Navy is even looking for now, as nukes and SEALS are the only things they always have room for and are always willing to throw money at. My enlistment bonus was $21,000, which you get after you finish school. After two years in the service you can star re-enlist for 2 extra years, which for a nuke will typically come with a $60,000 to $90,000 bonus and automatic advancement to E-5.

Boot camp is not very bad at all, and as a nuke you start out with E-3 pay as opposed to E-1, which is just more icing on the cake. Infact looking back I thought boot was sort of fun, but I am strange like that. :P

I was thinking mainly about going into the air force but navy doesn't sound bad either. They are the only two branches I will consider. also it might help that I took 4 years of JROTC so it I'm remembering correctly that should put me up a rank or two considering which service I join.

One of the main things that is holding me back right now is my girlfriend she's scared for me.

I took mine a while ago, can't remember my score. To be a tank crewman for the Marines it has to be above 90 in the technical field so I remember. I think I barely cut it, with a 90 or 91 or something. Overall, I can't remember though. I know I did great in Mechanical Comprehension, and a few others.

Can't remember what my overall score was. I know from my recruiter going on and on about ST and GT that they were as follows;

ST 120
GT 122

He was pushing me into commsec, linguistic interrogator, or intel spec. It was a ranger training package. I was young and stupid. I chose armorer. :P

Took mine over twenty years ago now. I honestly don't remember what my scores were, I can say however, that every branch of the military kept calling, wanting me to join. Like a [censored] I said no. I'll tell ya though, if I had it to do all over again, Id've joined, instead of what I wound up doing with my time back then.

Yeah, I've got a few regrets, that' would be one of them.

90, I don't remember the sub scores.

I ended up a 25B-Information technology specialist US Army(currently reserve status) almost picked Intel anolyst. Pretty much Network administration/security is what the actual job is along with the smaller task of actual repair and fixing stuff for the "technologically impaired"

My school is paid for though and when I finish my fourth year of college ROTC I get my commission.

I leaned towards the Army more or else I probably would of gotten into the nuclear sub program the Navy said they were offering when they came around the school. I never got a ton of info on it, just remember it was alot of schooling to work with nuclear power.

Oh yea, another note, I wish I had taken the ASVAB later, the score I joined off of was from the start of my second year of highschool when the JROTC offered the test for the seniors.

I took it years ago i forget what my score was..Actually i took it 3 times.

The 1st time my score was below what i was supposed to join for so i had to take it a second time and apparently i did so much better that my score was flagged and they had to make sure i wasn't coached so i took it a 3rd time.

I remember that two of the job openings for me was MP and sattlelite communications, after the 3rd test,on top of what i was told to go for...They told me i had to make a fourth choice andi told them i didn't know so they chose for me and came up with some food service crap and i was incredulous.

They were all like it's just a formality and i would have my choice but that last one gave me second thoughts and i opted not to join and the worse part is that i have spent alot of my work life doing food service jobs.

Stupid Irony.

I got a 50... I think it's poor. Still went in to the Corps though. My MOS was going to be Legal Admin, however, plans get changed either by yourself or someone else.

The overall score is the percentile you're in, so anything above 90 is pretty good. For Army scores I got a 99, with a 137 GT and a 104 in MECH (kind of bad, haha).

The test is a bit strange in that every branch of service evaluates it differently; think the Army's scores are out of 150, whereas the Air Force and Marines are out of 100 (but they weight them differently).

As far as the Army's concerned, all you really need is a GT of over 120 and you're good for your career. If you're below 100 you probably want to retake it; you need 100 for certain jobs and assignments, and a 115 to go officer.

EDIT: I came in as an E-1 ( ) and I'm a 25B, same as amdavis.

We didn't get to sort them at basic, just pick them out of the sand, clean them and put them back.

I scored a 41 on my ASVAB, I tried to enlist in the Army National Guard but they wouldn't allow me to continue with the enlistment process because I was slightly overweight by a few pounds. It's sad really cause at the time I could do just about 100 push-ups,sit-ups and I could march, walk or jog five miles. Yet all of that and they still wouldn't take me just because I was just slightly overweight :verymad: ...I guess they didn't figure I could lose thoes extra pounds while in boot camp huh <_< . Well it also doesn't help that my own mother interfeared with my diet  ...oh well I don't have to worry about that anymore <_<.

Scored a 90 overall. enlisted in the Army as a 91B - Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic.

I'd consider you weird if you were not scared to enlist. I remember when I went to MEPS...longest 10 hours of my life. Once you get down range, everything just flys by if you don't think about it. The first three weeks svck but just shut up, do what you're told and everything will be golden. Oh and do not be a Blue Falcon...we don't like those guys very much. :stare:

Maybe the aeroplanes run on a very strict weight margin? Maybe the trenches are too small?

Military is also getting full. During the recession people joined up in droves because it was a guaranteed job as long as you weren't a total dirtbag. Unfortunately it's gotten to the point where they have to figure any way at all to slim the ranks, and physical standards are the most politically correct and frankly the best way to do it.

Quite awhile ago, so i can't remember exactly. I'm thinking the GT was in the 130's. I did qualify for everything the Army had to offer.

This isn't (or wasn't when I took it, I should say) a difficult test for a highschool grad, and If I remember, folks in their 20's very often got high 90 percentiles.

I know, its unfortunate because of this a lot of people who join just because its a guarenteed job complain about EVERYTHING they have to do, thus making the people who are actually honored to serve their country and those who truly want to be there suffer. I'm not former military but I aspire to be very soon and I do my research, and this seems to be a consistent problem from what I've been told.

Air Force for me, I hope to get into Security Forces which is the Air Force version of an MP (with slightly different duties) despite the warnings of Airmen who say its a bottom of the barrel job and most who are in it are just there because they didnt qualify for much else so all they do is complain. I might make a career out of it, depends how smoothly I transition into military life.

Good luck with your military plans, hope it all works out :)

Yea, there are those who complain about everything "Oh my god, gota do PT again early in the morning" only been doing every day early in the morning FOREVER. I have seen some pretty sorry soldiers but they usually get what they deserve. I enjoy it, the more conditions svck the more I enjoy I don't know why, just have the "embrace the svck"

As for your plans, I almost tried to seek out the Air Force recruiter when I was making my branch decisions. I would of went in based on what I saw with him about security forces because that's what he was.

To the above posts:
Joe ain't happy unless he's [censored]in' ;)

Or

embrace the svckage

Twas too long ago to remember my scores. What I do remember is turning down the heliborne FO figurin' that I could hide behind a tree better than a helo. Looking up at those birds while rucking in the cold rain....what was I thinking???? ;)

Also, while I may not have enjoyed all of it, I go with this phrase: "Glad I did it. Glad it's over" And that was in peacetime.

Good luck with your endevours!

ps. beware of the prcE8 :lmao:

I've never even heard of this test before now and certainly haven't taken it. I feel like the only one.

Oh well, I don't plan on joining the military anyway. ^_^
