ATI HD5970 Flicker issues - list of things I've tried so far

Post » Fri Jun 03, 2011 5:36 am

Dunno if this might help anyone else (none of the below have fixed my particular issue) or maybe some dev might see this. anyway.

Thought I'd completely uninstall crysis 2 and try from scratch, and apply all the possible fixes mentioned so far in this forum. I even uninstalled my catalyst driver and software and used the latest Driver Sweeper to remove all ATI drivers. Additionally, after each test i fully rebooted my PC, as I've noticed the "flickering" tends to linger in memory (other games suddenly flicker too after Crysis 2 has run once, which is fixed by a reboot)
I use an ATI HD5970 card with 2GB (built-in xfire); 12Gb DD3; i7 CPU; Win 7 64 bit OS (with SP1)

- Installed Catalyst Software Suite 11.2, rebooted PC (http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx)

- Installed Crysis 2 -> autopatcher updates to 1.1
-> tested game -> heavy flicker right from the start and fuzzy bloom effect, rebooted PC

- Installed ATI Catalyst Application Profiles, rebooted PC
-> tested game -> heavy flicker right from the start and fuzzy bloom effect, rebooted PC

- renamed D:\Games\Crysis 2\bin32\Crysis2.exe to Bioshock.exe
-> tested game -> heavy flicker right from the start and fuzzy bloom effect, rebooted PC

- repeated above rename test with Rift.exe, WoW.exe and Crysis.exe, no improvement (reboot after each rename)

- imported the "virgin" crysis2.exe from the installation dvd into D:\Games\Crysis 2\bin32\Crysis2.exe
-> tested game, same identical flickering occured. rebooted PC

- running the game in windowed mode or disabling XFire DOES get rid of the flicker, until I look at the sky or a particular bright lightsource, then the flicker is back but to a lesser extent. However in this single GPU mode, the bloom "fuzzy" effect seems to be 10 times as intense; cars will almost glow, reflection is that intense

- I've tried the advanced GFX application from Wasdie (http://www.gamesas.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=12953) but even this only works flicker-free if i run it on a single GPU. Granted with this application there is no bloom effect either but the ambience of the game looks ver clinical and bright, .. it felt like playing castle wolfenstein lol.

If anyone has any fix that I have not mentioned here, I would love to hear it. Or maybe one of these might fix up your issue.

I know it doesn't specifically note crysis 2 on the remarks but this driver http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst114earlypreview.aspx should be newer than the 11.2 Catalyst...its a 11.4 preview driver for win7...also Im assuming you have the newest Crossfire Application Profiles from http://sites.amd.com/us/game/Pages/game-home.aspx

This is somehow weird.. I read about this flickering problem with MultiGPU everywhere but it seems as I am one of the lucky guys not having those issues.

I am running a 5970 too. Driver is 11.2, AppProfiles are 11.2_Cap4 (well, actually I have installed all the AppProfiles since 10.8, never uninstalled the old ones when applying the new ones). Here my PC Setup in case it might help (but I doubt so):

iCore7 930 2.66GHz@3.5GHz
6GB Corsair RAM DDR3-1600
ASUS 5970 2GB
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

EDIT:

Just checked my ingame FPS and it seems as Crossfire is not used while playing as I have an average FPS of about 35. SO forget about my Post.. :D

what he said.

im getting 45 fps average on a single 5870, it is still very playable but it's sorta depressing that i cant play using both gpu's at 60 fps

- imported the "virgin" crysis2.exe from the installation dvd into D:\Games\Crysis 2\bin32\Crysis2.exe
-> tested game, same identical flickering occured.

That worked for me, and as far as I know I'm running both cores on my 5970.
I just tried fraps (for the first time) and it seems to not show any higher fps than 50 for some reason, but it never goes below that. Might be something with fraps since I'm a noob on it...[My bad, had v-sync on :)]
Getting 75 - 85 fps at 1080p.
This is a very strange bug...

I will try this 11.4 driver, thanks

For those suggesting to disable xfire, it seems to make the "fuzzy" bloom effect & glow increase tenfold.
I also should have specified all my tests are for the single player campaign, not the MP

meh. no joy with the 11.4 preview driver. I heard there's another driver out, 11.3, but no updated CAP yet.

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_xp-32.aspx#1

It'll be a week tomorrow that I've had the game and I can't even play it. I wish I could just bich about lack of DX11 like the majority of people here; at least they can _play_ the game :S
