Atmosphere of Skyrim

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 10:17 am

So skyrim takes place in the home of the nords, the rugged mountainous regions.

What do you guys think the tone/atompshere will be like or what would you like to see. Do you think itll be just hard icy snow storming in your ears all the time or what

I really hope they go all out in sound design to help you feel like youre really in there. I thought Amensia did an amazing job at this and id really like to get a sort of similar RIGHT IN THERE feel from the sounds of skyrim.
Maybe things like as you peer over the edge or get closer to the edge of a cliff you really hear the wind pick up.

And im hoping the atmosphere of the caves/dungeons will be a bit darker so say in a dimly lit cave that youre creeping through carefully trying to avoid traps it would give you that feeling of holy crap whats in here it feels like somethin crazy is about to happen.

Maybe its just me that likes the darker atmospheres in general and specifically in those areas, it adds to the whole mysterious factor for me. And i also see it as a reason to use a torch / night eye /what have you

pretty general question i guess id just like to hear some more thoughts on what people would like in the sounds/atmosphere department that would help you feel more immersed in the game

With the music off, I would hope the wind actually gives you a chill, can't have mountains and snowstorms without wind. And the same goes for those ice wraiths, hope they sound, well, cold, if you see what I mean.

Also i cant wait to hear the giants/larger animals enemies. You know, the slow extremely heavy footsteps, hopefully you can feel / hear them from quite a distance, possibly seeing some trees shake as they push through them in cluttered areas or some environmental effect from their size.

Assuming from the music we have heard so far, and watching the videos, I bet the atmosphere will be hard and heavy, full of power and noise. The kind of ambience that just makes you wanna shout "COME GET ME YA STUPID DRAGON!".

Ya thats what im hoping for. Like while say the music/sounds etc in morrowind were more umm, i guess mystierious would be the word for it, fantasyish which i rly enjoyed A LOT. But yeah this is skyrim so im hoping for it to feel real harsh and a heavy like you say, and cold especially after you just drank down some nordic rotgut whiskey.

I imagine Skyrim to have varied locations and each location to be creative in both design and execution.

What would I want to find in the rugged mountainous terrain of Skyrim?

  • Valleys.. different and memorable ones.. one tranquil and green with a pristine lake another dark and ominous in the shadow of a mountain.
  • A quest taking place on a precarious side of a cliff traveling either up or down it
  • A long, bad ass rope bridge over a deep precipice
  • At least one area devoid of much plant life but filled with jagged rocks and unique creatures
  • Some areas with fatal crevices in the ice caps of the mountains

Wind howling around my ears, dragons screeching in the distance, the pounding of mammoths marching, the splash of pints being poured in taverns and the scurrying of kicked stones.

Anything less than this, and I'll be disappointed.

Soundwise, I'd be very happy if voice overs and sound effects would get filters applied to them depending on the location.
For example, someone speaking in the distance in a sewer would have some pretty heavy reverb filter on it.

This helps a lot with the sound immersion.
Here's an example I did with Oblivion as a test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFbgBbflgdc

Metro 2033 has a very cool sound design, with filters applied to every sound effects you hear. Makes you feel like you're really in the location.

Other than that, heavy cold winds should be heard when climbing mountains. And a strong wind should be heard when you're at the top.
City atmospheres with people shouting in the distance, doors being opened/closed, children yelling, etc.

Fallout 3 had an excellent sound design. I'm sure Mr. Lampert will, once again, do a superb job as Sound Director.
