Attackers should ONLY spawn OUTSIDE of the "building are

The current situation of attackers spawn points is ludicrous.

I am AMAZED that this mechanic (which was quite a large selling point) was implemented in this way.

I've played many hours (650) and have never actually seen any enemies spawn inside the territory. Sometimes I will arrive after the battle is well underway and by the time I get there they are already inside, which maybe why some think they just spawn inside, but every time I get there before the battle they do spawn outside the territory and attack from multiple directions. I'm really beginning to think people are just misunderstanding where the attacks are coming from.

What I don't like is that I absolutely have to be at every battle. There's no reason some of my defenses should be squashed by a few measly ferals simply because I don't show up at the battle. Games like the Total War series offer the option to either participate or auto complete the battle where it will calculate the offensive and defensive capabilities of both sides to determine an outcome. I would like to see something like this implemented in the game because sometimes I'm really into a quest or exploring far from some of these attacks.

I agree, never had it happen. Plus I don't build the walls all the way to the green, barely ever got over 3/4 in each settlement.

They probably did that at one point but decided against it when play testers or other employee tester build walls and fences to keep them out and The whole attack thing became boring and easily taken care of so the quick fix was simply spawn them in the compound maybe at one point they tried breakable/repairable wall peices but play testers or employees started using non section wall or housing pieces to make the wall thus back at square one. They also probably thought of making most if not all suitable pieces that have enough width as breakable/repairable but the list grow to large and would put a strain on consoles and medium built pc's so thats why we have what we have . My theory anyway.

Generally the spawn points are outside the build are but there are two or three settlements that seem to have them inside.

One is Hangmans alley which I think is OK because you can drop down into that spot from the rooftops, gaining access to the rooftops from a couple of street away.

Tenpines seems to be another, I reconcile that by there being a tunnel system that i don't know about.

Same with Somerville, one spawn point inside, one without.

One lot spawn next to the house, perhaps they get catapulted in, or hide inside the pack Brahmans cargo, while the second lot walk down the road.

I agree. I've had this happen multiple times (though oddly since I've passed 200 hours or so it has hardly occurred at all), and it's ridiculous. I like to build walls around my settlements, but I'm basically doing it for looks because enemies have magical teleportation abilities.

I've been present during an attack on Hangman's alley. Several Supermutants attacked from outside. They entered from the entrance that faces the river between the two buildings. Now I have to go find this tunnel system at Tenpines!

Attackers only spawn outside settlements.

If their move-to marker is blocked, like by a wall you built, they will be ported around it.

Consider these to be small grappling hooks they carry for climbing over.

I lay mines just inside the build area. Then watch body parts fly around.

I don't know that I've ever had enemies spawn inside a settlement, but if it were to happen, I'd likely just write it off as some kind of infiltration or sneak attack. I mean, who would have ever heard of the Trojan Horse if enemies always had to openly walk through the gate, eh? :)

At Zimonja outpost, Gunners spawned just next to the workbench.

At Oberland Station, raiders spawned in the middle of the cornfield. One raider even managed to spawn inside the watch tower and came running down the staircase.

At Taffington Boathouse, 2 radscorpions came trough the concrete floor I had put in the water. One of those scorpions even got stuck trying to get to the surface.

I was present at those settlements when the attacks began. Seen it with my own eyes.

There are already numerous reports of enemies spawning inside the settlements.

Misunderstanding, you say. Really?

it wouldn't be much of a mechanic if you could just wall off and put up some turrets.

That's a good point.

They can also carry virtual ladders, or virtually blow holes in your wall, carry virtual shovels or virtually drop from an aircraft.

They could virtually kidnap the Provisioner and force them to let you in.

So many possibilities.

Fortunately, I don't have to describe how it was done to arrive at the fact that it was done, and to clean up the mess that results... :D I can just imagine those ten supermutants creeping along on tippy-toe wearing black pajamas...

Thinking about it though, maybe the supermutants built their own teleporter, eh?

I have been in Sanctuary when it was attacked by super-mutants. There is a spawn point in the street right next to your old house. I had cleared the first wave, and they simply "faded in" right before my eyes.

IDK about their outside spawn points being blocked or whatever, but if so, spawning inside is just a bad mechanic IMO.

Doesn't ruin my experience or anything, but is a totally non-intuitive and surprising thing the first time.

One of the reasons I think it's a bad mechanic is because Sturges specifically suggests you build walls for defense as a part of the game.

Why make that suggestion if you know it won't prevent attacks or help during an attack?

It's misdirection and misinformation as a part of the in-game tutorial for settlement building. SMH....SMH....

About a million different RTS games have had much better mechanics for decades. It's lazy game design IMO.

I'm not very big on building walls anyway. I do fence off sections, and build "entrances" to the settlement in one fashion or another. However, that being said, I do place my turrets with a dual purpose in mind... that is to cover attackers on the inside as well as on the outside.

For instance that area you mentioned in front of the house is usually covered by at least 4 turrets from 4 directions.

Enemies do spawn inside of settlements. I've literally watched radscorpions appear out of thin air right outside of the workbench room at Kingsport. It happens. It's stupid.

It would be fun if you built a wall and the game showed a little video cut scene of a mutant giving one of it's brothers a leg up over the wall.

Which reminds me, has anyone seen a female mutant?

I accidentally built a trap at Warwick farm.

it's a junk wall with a little alcove in it.

All the foes end up in the alcove, they must think it's an entrance.

Above the alcove are turrets on platforms.

All the loot is then in one place amongst the pile of bodies.

Saves the legs.

Yeah, I get it now, it's just that it seems like a big FU to the player the first few times it happens.

The game guides you into thinking that spending all this time fiddling with walls that snap in weird places, don't fit together, and leave gaps all over will help protect you, then WHAM!, they do nothing. And that's a huge waste of time and frustration of building/working with the build system that I really don't appreciate. Just tell me how it works so I can set things up better instead of wasting my time.

Now that I understand the system/how it works better I am much better at defending, setting up cross fire with the turrets, etc...

As I said, it doesn't ruin the game for me, I just don't appreciate being jerked around.

In Fallout 3 they explain that the FEV turns all humans into "Male" super mutants, wether they were male or female to start with.

Super Mutants basically don't have gender.

To be honest, I think the walls are really more like eye candy than a functional obstacle. I've learned how to build walls without those gaps (generally :) ) but I don't really build many walls unless I'm going for a "fortress" look.

Maybe so, but I like to play as "realistic" as possible. If walls and fortifications don't do anything, don't put them in the game.

After spending numerous hours of building and fortifying several settlements, I found it very frustrating it was all for nothing.

By now, I don't care anymore about settlements. It really destroyed the game for me.
