Attacking while on horses...

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:13 pm

I was always annoyed at the fact that you cannot attack while you are on a horse, either melee, ranged or spells. You always had to get of the horse then take out your weapon and fight. Hope Bethesda take that into consideration..what do you guys think?

Might be an issue...if there are even horses in the game, which so far as I know isn't confirmed yet.

So far, they seem to not be implementing horses in Skyrim. They're saying "We can't get it right... so we're scratching that option (Maybe)." They may or may not be in.
Honestly, I don't care about horses. But if the game lacks ridable bears, I'll be sad.

I'm guessing thats sarcasm, If there are no horses there will probably won't be any mounts. Period.

If there are horses in the game, I'm sure it will have mounted combat.

The reason I believe this is:

Todd said he wanted horses to be good, to feel real... if they are to be implemented. Part of that feeling counts as fighting on the horseback according to me.
So the question is not whether mounted combat will be in or not, but if mounts will be in the game at all.

It sounds to me like if mounts are in, mounted combat is in. If mounted combat and the control scheme can't be done right, then they'll cut mounts so they don't end up with the Oblivion mount issue.

Bear Cavalry is a must, though.

Todd said he was not satisfied with horses in Oblivion and compared them to RDR which had better ones. At first I thought he's just saying that out of modesty or to build some more suspense. Then I watched a video review of Red Dead and I must admit he was right, it raised the stakes pretty high. I'm in favor of horses and mounted combat, but only if they don't look ridiculous compared to RDR and Mount&Blade.

It's been discussed in this thread already. No, mounts are unconfirmed.

Well, horse meat is confirmed according to some of the pics in the GI videos. So we would assume that the presence of the meat would suggest the presence of the animal.

There were certain meats in oblivion with no presence of the corresponding animal I believe. They also had audio for chirping birds but no birds. They also had an abundance of apples but no apple trees.

Don't let the horse meat fool you.

There was beef in Oblivion, but no cattle.

And before anyone brings it up, you only get minotaur horns from minotaurs.

Yea so assuming horses are in just because there's horse meat isn't a valid argument.

Forgot about the beef/no cattle in OB.

My intuition tells me that horses are in. If they are mountable is another question. I highly doubt they will have mountable horses without mountable combat, however.

The pic in the GI video was CONCEPT art. And, ff course, everything you see in the concept art makes it into the game, right?

I think it would be very hard to do, especially if horses aren't in the game( it is unconfirmed). But even if they are, they would have to be really hard to hit with a sword( seeing as how they would literally have to be clinging to the side of your horse), bows are to complicated to do while on a horse, and even spells would be hard. What happens if you hit your horse? It dies, falls on top of you, and you are stuck there, under a probably overfed horse, unable to attack, as you are eaten alive by some kind of wild creature, or cannibalistic bandit. But hey, if anyone can make it work, its Bethesda ;)

You guys need to listen to the podcast again. Todd said horses ARE going to be in the game ride-able or not.

"A world without them feels a little weird, without seeing them....We definitely want to have them. We don't know yet what you are going to be able to do with them and to what level."

Does that sound like the animal isn't going to be in the game to you?

When did he say this? I remember him saying that they were trying it, but were unsure if mounts, or horses at all, will be in the final game. I may be wrong( it wouldn't be the first time), but i don't recall him confirming anything for sure in the podcast
As to your quote, he said he wants to have it. But he also said they were trying things, and not everything will make it into the game. He was merely commenting on his personal hopes for the game

Look at the last sentence in the quote, it's the interactivity with horses that is in question, not whether or not horses are going to be in the game.

I'm kind of split on this. While I would love to be able to do combat on any mounted creatures, I think it will be somewhat difficult to balance. What comes to mind is Dynasty Warriors (yea, I realize that Obsidian is way way better, but I'm still concerned), where mounted combat was stale and useless. Also, I'm not really sure how deep they want to develop the mounted combat.

I'm sure this will be included as long as horses are included, which didn't seem to be a 100% sure thing if you heard that recent gameinformer podcast.

I'd rather have no mounts then mounts like Oblivion. It just got annoying and absurd that you had to dismount to fight someone.

IT shouldn't be that hard to balance out. Being mounted gives you certain advantages and disadvantages. You can't use your entire skillset on a mount but in return you can put more force behind a blow (with a charge or such) among other things.

There should be logical advtages and disadvantages to fighting on horseback.
