How do YOU control enemies in the game from becoming too overwhelming when fighting?

Let's say there are 2-4 enemies in front of you. You stand there either dual wielding swords or a shield and sword. How do YOU fight? Do you just go in and swing, swing, swing like crazy? Or do you have a strategy to taking out these 2-4 enemies?

Shouts or special powers like the Nords battle cry can be useful in that situation.

Shield bashing or ice form spell. If that fails, I either run away or I die and attempt entering the room with a few more sneak attacks.

I use as dual wield my signature power attack. Usually a Fos, Ro, Dah to move stuff around and than just start mowing them down. Only boss level enemies take more than 1 dw power attack. Most average enemies take a dw power attack + a signal swing to finish off. Then for base enemies I usually just finish them with a single normal power attack.

I try to avoid being in the middle. Try to have them all in front of you, so you quickly can block after you have attacked. And if you use spells (1h weapon and a spell) i would learn fury, because in that way you can get them to start attacking each other :P (Fury is an illusion spell that makes the NPC attacking
everything in sight including friends)

I use dual wield daedric daggers, they both have 1 second fiery soul trap and 1 second paralyse, giving me 350+ charges. The paralyse effect is frequent due to the speed of the daggers, so I can knock people down and concentrate on others. Shouts and summons are also helpful.

I don't fight anymore. I just summon two dremora lords. Feels powerful not having to do my own dirty work.

I'm a solo Nightblade myself so I keep a spell in my off hand which means I cannot block and without a companions I can't just let them tank.

I use a lot of fancy foot work as a result. If the landscape permits as well I go all Assassins Creed and bust out some freerunning to get some space. If things get messy I always have Elemental Fury and Unrelenting Force to break up swarms. It all boils down to fancy foot work in the end though.

Shield bashing, absolutely. It's a lifesaver; I love block and it's practically my main skill :foodndrink:

Oh and duel sword wielding seems ridiculous to me if you have no defensive capabilities whatsoever. It's just the very definition of hacknslash - just running in and clicking, with no tactical combat. Swordnboard ftw :celebration:

This exact situation is what caused me to partially level up sneeking and archery. I snipe one or two out with a bow before rushing in to a group of four, lol. Before learning some archery, groups would kill me every time. I'm a board and sword player. Plus shield bashing is almost more effective than using a weapon.

Depends on the class of my opponents..

If there's a mage among them i generally try to position myself in such a way where there's an enemy melee fighter between us, so i can do a sprinting powerattack on that mage from behind cover :)
If it's all melee opponents its more like kiting them or using bottlenecks to take them on one at a time.

Sneak in and do some damage on the enemies with my bow first then run in , finish them off with the sword. (so it's sort of like a combo of bow and sword)

I will lure them into a tight passage and fight them one by one or two at a time. If that isn't an option, then I circle-strafe to keep my enemies from flanking me.

A single dual-wield power attack can easily take 2 full-healed enemies at once, if you've a bit of aim. Great for crowd control.

That said, sadly there are hardly ever considerable groups of enemies attacking at once in the game, apart of some civil war missions. So I hardly have to use crowd control stuff.

I walk around them or back off slightly, enemy AI has a hard time moving together in a good fashion and even if there is 3/4 in front of you, you're still only really fighting 1 on 1, also in a lot of dungeons there are corridors which are too thin for multiple enemy to fit through, these work great for forcing a 1 on 1 spell, also works good for a couple of the cone or penetrating mage spells.

As if a Sword&Board character isn'r the most boring and 'overpowered' style you can pursuit. I am not judging you for it but it's easy, dual wielding characters actually have to employ more strategy and timing and most of all, evasion to outlive their opponents. Don't get me started on the Mage section. :P
