Attn: Best way to fix quicksave bug.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:31 am

After reading through the other threads on this I noticed a lot of the work arounds require extra leg work each time you load the game.
And to be clear I have Vista 64 with UAC turned off.

This quick and easy solution will save you the hassle and after applying this fix you can quick save/autosave as normal and steam
can't diddle with your files.

You need Administrator rights for this and I'm assuming that most of you do.

Go to the steam userdata subfolder and look for a folder named remote that has the quicksave files which steam insists on backing up.
Right click on the folder and go to properties, then under the security tab look through the list till you see your name, select it
and in the permissions list below it either remove you deny yourself ALL permissions.

Hit apply and close out all the windows and try to access the folder you changed. You know you did it right if you get
a window saying something like "You currently don't have permission to access this folder."

If you can't access it, neither can steam.

Now you should be able to play the game and quicksave/autosave all you want and not have to worry about it again.
I've tested this and it works like a charm.

If you are worried about locking yourself out of folder, create another admin account and undo the above changes.

Sorry if this isn't clearer but I'm really tired.

Tried this and checked Deny for all the permissions, hit apply, and got an error saying access was denied ~_~

Dunno why. I am the administrator.

Edit: But I did try to click it and it said I could not access as it's supposed to. However, I still am not able to launch.

You do realize this is a one-way ticket - now you won't ever get to that folder, once you need to / the devs patch the quicksave issue..

Did you not read the whole thing? Just create a 2nd admin account and go back in and undo the changes. I've done it
twice.

You guys do realized that even if you denied access you, as the admin, can still undo the change WITHOUT a second admin user?

Also the fact that when steam tries to access those files the permissions will be under SYSTEM instead of YOUR USER or ADMIN?

In actuality, the "Admin" on WIndows 7 and Vista isn't truly an Admin account, more like an "Almost-Admin" account.

To set up a True Admin account, you can probably figure out the proper keywords for a Google search.

And of course, use True Admin only when you really need to.

... or you can just disable steam cloud for the game? It should then fall back to using C:\Users\ like any sane game.

Except it doesn't.

EDIT: That is, you're right, that's what *should* happen, but it doesn't work.

It works beautifully for me. No more seeing an autosave or quicksave from way back in the Prospector Saloon at lvl 1.

And best of all, it's quite easy to unlock said folder if you ever need to. You actually don't need a second admin account. At least not on Windows 7 with the UAC off.

THANK YOU! I lost probably about 3-4 hours of progress due to the damn save file bug. I just tried and I think this fix even works through the game crashing. Before I used to lose my save files if I didn't exit the game "gracefully" or if the game crashed, but now it doesn't seem like I do!
