Australia

I don't think that it follows that becuase 2010 Australia is multicultrual and welcoming to Chineese, that the same would be true in Fallout's world. To gauge what was likely there, I think we have to go back to the 1950's and draw a new timeline based on the opinions and attitudes that were in place. In the 50's, Australia was a very different place.

I just want to add that the discussion of whether the specific policies were right or wrong doesn't belong here.

Australia does have a lot of Chineese people in its history, particularly with the 19th century Gold Rush in central Victoria; However one of the first things the federal government enacted upon its formation (in 1901) was the Immigration Restriction Act 1901 - a key plank in what would later become the "White Australia" policy, partially in response to racial antagonism in the goldfields. This act would not be fully repealed until 1973.

The act particularly targeted Chineese and Japaneese imigrants, discouraging them whilst encouraging immigrants from European nations.

Easing of these restrictions did occur throughout the 50's, however non europeans were not permitted to become citizens until 1957 (and at that point still had to show 15 years residency), and entry restrictions for asians relaxed in 1964. However in 1966, there were still only 746 non-european immigrants to Australia that year, the effects of the change in policy would take a fair bit of time to trickle through.

Depending on where exactly you draw the divergence line, either the full effect of the White Australia policy could be in place (a trickle of Immigrants, and citizenship not possible), the easing of its restrictions could be partially in place (a trickle of immigrants, and Citizenship possible after a long time), more or less revoked with little effect, or a result similar to today.

However, it is worth pointing out that in 2001, only 3.2% of Census respondents indentified themselves as of Chineese decent. In contrast, 4.3% identified themselves as German, and 5% as Italian. As such, I couldn't see much resistance from a Chineese commander in pushing the button.

Indeed they should, except lets just not limit it to only Australia and make you able to hire a boat to take you to the former european commonwealth, like point lookout, except without being a dlc and not as glitchy.

Was listening to National Public Radio and a particular topic caught my attention. It was about Australia and it's economic relations in asia. First there was a piece about certain schools teaching various asian languages to children since these are the countries that the nation routinely interacts. Tthey mentioned susequently that most exports from australia go to China and other asian nations. One representative stated they are an asian nation.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with this. Hell, the US does similar things with asian countries no matter how much it hurts the US economy and it's people. This world, however, hasn't had resource wars (yet) or international tensions based on Fifities mentality. Hate to say it but Fallout's Australia might also think it makes economic sense to trade mostly with a fellow asian state. When the war begins the US military won't appreciate war materials flooding into enemy China so Australia will have to go. I wonder how many of thoses ortillary platforms quietly sit above Australia's radioactive wastes.

Its still uncertain who will star in the movie. Gibson said that he is just too old and nobody would take him seriously playing the Road Warrior again. :D

In fallout's world leading up to the final days, the only value most treaties held is their worth as toilet paper.

1950's Australian mentality was definately not asian (and still isn't if you talk to the people). The 1950's mentality was mostly a white, "european" Australia that just happened to be in the pacific.

That's correct, Australia is NOT an asian country, we just have to have some weird neighbors to offset our overwhelming awesomeness.

As a Canberra boy, I can shead a little light on that!

There is a facility under what is now the Department of Finance and Administration that was intended as a cold war bunker, but is now used as office space... If you go to the car park, you can see some skylights at ground level where it is (I think they're a retrofit done after the fall of the wall). I think that particular section of the building is used for Environment Australia now.

There are also stories, (unconfirmed of course), about tunnels leading from the Lodge (the PMs residence), to Parliament house, and on to this bunker, the Treasury building, and the Department of Defense complex in Russel.

I think I also heard a few whispers about a large Defense complex in Bungendore (some distance away, but close enough to commute from), but my memory of that is so faded, I could just be making it up.

Saw something a while back about using a depleted quartz or garnet minig site. Underground housing cut straight out of the rock.

It has been said numerous times in numerous topics in these forums that continents burning and sinking was just artistic hyperbole from the perspective of tribals.

It's not that far off. No dev has come out and said it was just "hyerbole." There is alot of evidence to support that every nation on earth was destroyed.

Fallout Bible by http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Chris_Avellone states that in:

2077: At some point, one of the nuclear powers began launching nuclear weapons, which resulted in a massive retaliatory response that culminated in the nuclear annihilation of the Great War on October 23, 2077. All nation-states effectively ceased to exist following the holocaust.

Fallout one intro says "storm of world war had come again" which means it was not a war between China and America alone. Every nation was involved.

*Spoiler* end part of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeOHEU7Ykyg. It does not matter who starts it and who they are trying to nuke. Every nation will launch and every nation will be hit and effected by the nukes. Australia as well.
