author/s of the elder scrolls?

Post » Fri Feb 04, 2011 2:52 am

i'v always wondered, who wrote the elder scrolls? i picked up a book (can't remember the name of it) in the chapel building of the ancestor moth temple and it said the elder scrolls exceed the gods, both aedra and daedra. just wondering if anyone knows.

Actually, I think I'll send this question to the Lore khans, since the Elder Scrolls are a foundation of all four games of the series, and it's more a background question than a gameplay one.

We don't know. None of the texts has ever bothered to explain where they came from.

The Pension of the Ancestor Moths says they "exceed even the gods, both aedra and daedra."

Perhaps C0DA wrote it? From what I gather, C0DA appears to be perhaps a "part" of Time that exists completely and totally. Perhaps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_dimension? Maybe it is Time and Possibility combined?

As I looked at the article I linked, it seems very likely to at least be the 5th dimension, in my opinion.

Perhaps not, and we need more information before being able to make an educated guess.

The world works by mythopeia, which sounds like 'myth+poetry.' Stories that all existence adheres to. It makes sense that they were written down in their true form somewhere.

Poeia is apparently a Latin word derived from Greek that refers to making or creating. Mythopoiea is the creation of myth.

We honestly don't know. If they do "exceed even the gods", then, yeah, maybe there's scrolls about them.

Really, it's probably one of those things that should have been explored in Oblivion. But, you know, didn't happen.

Muthsera,

Although this answer may not satisfy you, my conclusion is that [you] wrote the Elder Scrolls.

Myths, by their very nature, require being told, and all of NIRN is created by such myth(s).

[You] are a being with two aspects: the real person playing and the in-game character.

These beings are called "heroes" and are unique in all of NIRN, for they can both read and create those myths.

Both Zurin Arctus and the Prophet state that a "Hero" is needed to fulfill a prophecy, and even the Gods are powerless to act without him or her.

So, who wrote the Elder Scrolls? [You] did.

Very true. But MK works through (often false) cognates the same way Nirn works through myths. :P

And Word Merchant, empty your damn PM box. I had some really funny joke about barristers in Daggerfall, but I forgot it. How goes the appeal?

I think (but have no evidence to support it) that something higher than the Aedra, Daedra and the other named things which I do not yet understand, which still remains nameless and formless wrote them.

This seems like a good question; like most here, I've just been accepting that the Elder Scrolls are ancient without thinking of their origins. They might have existed as long as mortals have; or do you think they're older than that?

http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Pension_of_the_Ancestor_Moth- On the Elder Scrolls;

"These writing exceed even the gods, both Aedra and Daedra."

So one would assume that they exceed mortals, too.

The cite is taking too long to load onto this computer; sorry.

Do we know that "exceed" refers to age? I would have thought it means "go beyond" or "exceed in power".

Hm, it might refer to exceed in power, due to the fact that the Scrolls tell of what has, and what will always happen, something neither the Aedra nor Daedra can do. But I assumed that it meant "exceed in age", or "are older than".

Either way, we still don't really know who their author is.

guys, the reason i asked this qwestion was because i was curious as to whether or not there is a higher power in the elder scrolls universe than aedra and daedra. my guess is that when it talks about exceeding the gods, bethesda is referring to itself in third-person because they did create the elder scrolls. therefore they exceed the aedra and daedra because they created them. if it is not referring to bethesda in "the pension of the ancestor moths", i am curious as to what power could be higher than the gods? this is the only explanation i could come up with. perhaps it is a qwestion that will never be answered.

The godhead in TES is said to have multiple-personality disorder, and is amnesiac. Probably the gods, being facets or splinters of the godhead, can be said to be exceeded by it. More knowledgeable forumites can say it better than I can, though.
