Auto-Health Regen

Post » Thu Aug 18, 2011 10:48 pm

Regardless, watching the demo you can see Todd needed to use potions. That was with a level 34 character too. So my statement still stands. Food and potions will still be very useful.

@XTC I wanted it. You make it sound like implementing health regen took a month of dev time. It probably took 5 minutes.

you wanted it after it was announced, if they would announce that there was no health regen, youd defend that. If they announced that you cant die and that you just get a scar like this was Fable, youd defend that. Doesnt matter if it took 5 minutes, or 5 days, its a total waste and wasn't needed.

Todd's health never auto regens during combat in the demo. Food for thought.

Didn't say they wouldn't, just clarifying that as of now it seems like health regens constantly but it will be so slow as to not be useful during combat. How would you be able to tell the movement of 1-5 points per second on a meter 999 units long?

Was there this much whining when Oblivion added Auto-regenerating Magicka (OH NOES! MAGICKA POTIONS ARE USELESS NOW!), or Morrowind added auto-regenerating Stamina (OH NOES! RESTING IS USELESS NOW!)?

Now, Health, Magicka, and Stamina are consistent with each other.

And I don't see it as out-of-synch with RPGs... Nethack has auto-regenerating health, and after a certain level, so do Diablo and its clones.
Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age also have regenerating health.
Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale didn't, but that's because D&D 2nd and 3rd editions didn't either.

I've found more RPGs that have slowly regenerating health than RPGs without.

now hes said this im not worried about it. if its anything like the kotor rate of regen its nothing to worry about. that regen definitely didnt render force heal and medpacks useless, especially in the heat of combat.

Magicka is a give and take. I kinda liked it having regen because then you could actually play a mage character without relying on potions (Warriors don't really need health potions). Stamina should have ALWAYS been regen because it effects EVERYTHING. Health is supposed to be much more static than those 2

Why should health, an abstraction of a number of factors that determine survivability in combat be as static? Warriors used to require health potions or spells, and now spells are impractical for dedicated warriors.

Why should health be more static than fatigue? From a "Realism" standpoint Walking around and going about my business doesn't halt the rate at which I recover my breath after having it knocked out of me after, say, falling off a horse, or the rate at which my random cuts, scraqes, and bruises heal over, or the rate at which the pain after I stub a toe, sprain an ankle, or piss on an electric fence takes to subside. However, it takes active rest for me to eliminate fatigue built up after a long day of work.

From a gameplay standpoint, constant recovery of all three combat resources outside of battle keeps the game's action and pacing flowing.

I doubt they'd go this way to be honest, since it was Todd playing the demo, he was obviously in Todd-mode. In which, he can probably never die/lose health/have unlimited health etc. IN essence, a god-mode to just display the game, or.. Todd-mode > God-mode. LOL xD If there really is auto-regenerative health.. I hope there is a setting you can turn off to remove it, that would solve everyone who has the problem like me with the regenerative health somewhat ruining the game, but allow those who want to take the easy way out to take it.

I am appalled that Bethesda has crippled the game in such a way by adding auto-health regen. It is my sincere belief that this sort of regen system will ruin the feel of the game (you just automatically become healed with zero explanation)

Edit: It has been revealed that large health regens during the demo were most likely due to hotkeyed potions. While this removes the concept of huge health regens mid-battle the question remains as to just how fast this constant health regen is.

Anyway, add your thoughts

My thought is that people should stop crying on these forums about how "their game was senselessly [censored] by the developers by dumbing it down for all the slack-jawed knuckle-draggers that make up the new target audience" (none of you have ever said it that way to my knowledge, but I feel safe assuming that you've thought it). It's in the game, so you have three options:

1. You all create a thread that is a petition for Bethesda to exclude passive health regeneration from the hardcoe mode (assuming there is one and they haven't already disabled it). DON'T DEMAND ITS REMOVAL, some people (myself included) don't play these games to strain our gameplay abilities because we like to play games to relax, not scream at a monitor/TV because the game was designed with only dice-rollers in mind. That way, it works for the people that want it, and not for the people that don't.
2. On your PC, mod the health regen to 0, so it doesn't provide any benefit to you, even though it's there.
3. Accept it's presence.

Now, while I go grab a soda, I'll be eager to come back to see how many of you have completely ignored my post to go on crying about the tragedy of the game being somewhat easier for the player, or only reading the first sentence and assuming I told you in a drawn out way to [lol] off.

Not sure why Beth would even waste their time with this. Nobody wanted it, or asked for it.

Yeah...the highest number of endorsemants any of those mods have is 24. Compare that to mods that make the game harder, like http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15256, http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2518, Warcry, etc, then get back to us.

Honestly... health regeneration increases the challenge of the game... Knowing that health regenerates over time encourages the player to press on and continue exploring at sub-optimal health in the hopes of having sufficient HP by the time they face their next threat. A player with low-but-regenerating health is more likely to stumble across an encounter with non-maximized health, and thus be killed, than someone who is careful to rest/heal between every encounter because low health doesn't take care of itself.

Also, I find regenerating health to be more enjoyable/"immersive" from an actual gameplay standpoint: When an encounter's finished and my health is not critically low, I can keep myself focused on the world around my character instead of worrying about details on the HUD, content with the knowledge that any deficencies there will take care of themselves as I admire the scenery, or continue exploring on my epic quests.

So what? There was a bunch of nudity mods, doesnt mean we asked for it to be in the vanilla game. Almost nobody wanted this in Sky, until it was announced and confirmed in.

Ooh boy... you should have been around these forums earlier :hubbahubba: There have been dozens of threads that were thinly-veiled requests for nudity in Vanilla Skyrim... some getting more traction than others.

Actually... I believe several important people did ask for it: Those who've been playtesting the game from the start and seeing what worked and what didn't.

Somebody in this thread said that they wanted health regen before it was announced. They even downloaded a mod for it in Oblivion and liked it better.

Not really, they put it in to appeal to more people. Like most of their decisions and PR has shown.

I used a regen mod for oblivion that let me regen out of combat slowly so this doesn't bother me at all.

After playtesting and ensuring it worked and played better than no health-regen. Same thing with the removal of Attributes (Which nobody requested, but the playtesters apparently found to be an overwhelmingly good thing).

Well, I know Level-scaling was pretty overwhelmingly demanded for Oblivion, because Morrowind had a problem with becoming Godlike too early. Only in hindsight did people realize that mistake.

And... level scaling worked pretty well in Fallout 3.

My point is that just because they develop and even test something, doesnt make it automatically better, or good for the series. Never saw many, if any threads back in the day wanting regen health in ES. Most every time its brought up, its shot down like it was a Gun thread. And it should be, because there's no reason to have regen health. It doesnt add anything to the game, except for ease.
