Autoaim is over the top (video included)

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 6:27 am

I made a youtube video to show how bad autoaim in this game is. If you know of a fix for this please share it with me. Google and forum searches have not helped.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yqiXreIZgT0

I have tried many different ini tweaks and have found no real mods for this yet. I suppose once the construction set comes out it will be an easy fix. But this really is killing my experiance in this game. Use the console command tcai on an enemy to test it for yourself. I will post my description from the video here:

This is just a basic showing of how over the top the autoaim in skyrim currently is. I used the console command tcai to turn the enemy combat ai off.

I have these skyrim.ini tweaks on in the video:
[Combat]
f1PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7
f3PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7
[Actor]
fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=14000.0000

the first two just changes the trajectory of the arrow to start at the crosshair and drop instead of the default which fires the arrow above the crosshair. And the third allows you to hit enemies further away.

And have also tried:
fMagnetismObjLookingMult=0.0000
fMagnetismObjHeadingMult=0.0000
fMagnetismObjStrafeHeadingMult=0.0000
fMagnetismLookingMult=0.0
fMagnetismHeadingMult=0.00
fMagnetismStrafeHeadingMult=0.0
fMagnetismStrafeBaseSpeed=0
fMagnetismStrafeMaxDistance=0

and none of that made a difference either. If any one knows of a mod or tweak please tell me because this autoaim is ruining my immersion and any feeling of skilled shooting.

Oh and what the hell was up with that arrow at :35?

ruining my immersion

Uh oh, there's that word again.

Anyhow, I'm 160 hours in and I haven't noticed any problems with the Archery. I play with Actor Draw Distance maxed out, but I can still hit enemies at maximum range, and the supposed autoaim doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.

Try:

f1PArrowTiltUpAngle=0
f3PArrowTiltUpAngle=0

Agreed... haven't noticed it once. Maybe on a controller it would be more apparent, but my arrows pretty much go where my mouse is pointing

If you want to hit the far away enemies then add this in your C:\Users\Michael\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\skyrim.ini

[Actor]
fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=14000.0000

That doesnt increase actor draw distance, it increase the distance at which hitboxes are used.

And as for your other comment i really dont like missing my shot by three feet only to have it magically appear in the middle of the targets head.

i have noticed the horrible autoaim when I tried hitting people standing behind other people. Not exactly behind but a bit to the side. I couldn't do it. Always hit the guys standing in front... Thats when I stopped using my bow :[

use the tilde key ~ to open up the console in the game and turn off the npc combat ai with the command tcai so they just stand there and please see for yourself. If it isnt as bad as the video shows it would give me some hope. Maybe its just my game.

In an RPG we are not supposed to have perfect aim every shot. They have to count in experience so even if you aim correctly it's not always supposed to be right on target. At least that is my thought on the matter.

But apperantly it's always right on target. Even if you aim a foot to the side. Atleast that's what the video showed me.

I bet early hunters and gatherers would love their arrows to have a homing device built-in.

Is it an option off by default or something? Because i just tried shooting an arrow at a wolf and i aimed right above the wolf and it never moved the reticle on the wolf and i shot the arrow, like normal gravity pulls it down in on the ground. Intentionally missed the wolf just to test it...

By intentionally miss i mean if i would have aimed higher gravity would have pulled it down right on the wolf.

i play on console, and i got into a fight with a bandit archer to test this right now, we were about the same distance away from each other as you and the draugr were. and moving my reticle right outside of his body made me miss, and between the legs i also missed. Maybe it is a bug of some sort?

I'm not sure how people can complain that something is broken in the game if you tweak the ini files and make changes to something? I have never encountered a problem with Archery, if my aim is good I hit if I aim poorly I miss, surely that's how it should be? If you tinker with the ini files than surely it's trial and error and archery isn't broken in the game if your tweaks don't work.

Maybe I was just imagining this but my auto aim seemed to improve as my skill improved.

At low levels I could aim center mass on a target and have the arrow fly a few feet to the right or left.

but when bow was 75+ and especially now at 100 I can intentionally aim to the right or left of targets and still have the arrow find its mark.

The problem is the arrows always shoot horizontally perfect. I wouldnt mind if it was just low bow skill and random chance but it isnt. I have never missed a shot that was on target. I have also never missed a shot that was slightly off target. The only way I am missing in this game right now is when I shoot 3+ feet off target. Also I wasnt allowed to shoot at an npc one time who was partially behind a door beacuase my arrows would magically go for the center of the torso instead of the flesh i was aiming at. Archery is a big hobby of mine and the physics in this game is pretty awesome. I just wanted to bring this to attention in case someone had a workaround or ini tweak.

Oh and using all original ini files and a newly installed skyrim didnt fix the situation either.

And I am also sorry for using the word auto aim. Lets start calling it aiming assistance instead.

I used to think there was auto-aim, then I took an arrow to the knee.

Auto-aim? What? The arrows are by default shot at an angle slightly above the crosshairs and fall down with gravity. Otherwise, they go where you point. The collision detection in Skyrim gets weird at times, and I suspect that makes people think the arrows have more interesting behaviour than they do.

Examples of weird collision are abundant in Skyrim. Put some gems in a bowl and see how that goes. Stand in one of those hand carts you find by the roads. The results are often hilarious and dangerous. I find compared with things like this my arrows do pretty much what I expect (except that shooting straight should be harder at low skill).

this isn't auto aim
auto aim is when you're reticule sticks to the target when you get close to it
what you're referring to here would be hitboxes
and they seem to be too big

my best guess is it's a console thing
not as easy aiming precisely with a controller
just carried over to pc I think
not that big of a deal IMO
this isn't a shooter

Maybe this was a bad topic to start. The video clearly shows that I am shooting far to the left and right and also above the head and below the crotch and almost all of these shots connect. Shooting from far away also yields the same result.
Even changing that ini file to make arrows shoot perfectly straight with no arc had the magnetic hitbox. If they went where i was pointing them they would have missed. I just want the construction set already so I can fix this.

Morrowind and Oblivion do not have this problem, why start now.

Is it possible this is part of what Bethesda implemented in their "Magnetism" combat system? I read that for melee, your attacks naturally move towards opponents and away from fiends because people didn't like how attacks hit indiscriminately in previous titles (which would often cause unintentional friendly fire). I don't know if the system includes ranged attacks, though.

For reference, magnetism is mentioned here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1181505-skyrim-info-compendium-and-faq/
