Avast: A story of incompetence

Post » Fri Jul 25, 2014 7:59 pm

*I apoligize in advance if this is the wrong place to put this, as I am fairly new here*

So, today I got on to my computer and decided, "you know what, I think i'll play some Skyrim"

And so I went down and double clicked on the SKSE launcher icon. Little did I expect to hear a familiar sound, as the Avast anti-virus program popped up and declared that SKSE was a virus. Problem was, SKSE was not a virus. I had just used it the night before, and it worked perfectly fine. And I hadn't even shut down the computer since that time. So I went to SKSE's website and tried to redownload it, but Avast wouldn't let me.

I'm not gonna lie, I am pretty mad, and wrote a fairly angry false positive report to Avast.

But ultimately, I'm not mad that Avast said SKSE was a virus. No, I'm mad because I have used SKSE Literally, not figuratively, hundreds of time while Avast was on my computer, and only now has it had a problem with it. What if it actually was a virus! Would you have just let it slide Avast?

I suspect that soon I will be taking my business elsewhere, as Avast has honestly been getting worse these past few days. It seems like everyday it reports a false positive on something random while I am browsing the internet.

And so if you are reading this and are thinking of getting some new anti-virus software soon, I would caution you to be careful with Avast, as it has had a severe drop in quality lately. And thats it. Just had to get that off my chest.

I think Avast is flagging it as a false positive. You have to make it an exception.

I don't use Avast, but all scanners have a way making certain programs an exception.

Almost no virus scanner will be 100% all the time. They will add positives whenever they upgrade their heuristics engine or their detection libraries. So it's actually quite common for a virus scanner to start detecting something it hasn't detected before.

One of the things I look into when selecting an AV is false positives. A note on Avast: I generally steer way clear of them. Too many false positives. I've seen it decide Steam was evil, Skype, and many other things.

And I always have my AV set to ignore (at least for on-access scans) the folders where I have my games installed.

I never had a false positive with Avast. And I have been using it for at least 4 years since switching from AVG.
