Avoiding mounted combat... Why?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 7:47 am

Evryone's complaining about the evasion from developers on the subject of spears, but my question is why haven't they said anything about the possibility of mounted combat? It hasn't really been talked about too much so i'm suprised they just haven't told us yet. Is anyone else wondering why they left it out of the Combat Update from the other day?

The same reason they aren't talking about all the other things people want to know. They'll release a steady stream of information until the game is released. If they did most of it right now, then the hype would fall before release.

I feel like mounted combat would be too exploitable and janky in any form they implement it.

Mounted combat would be incredibly difficult to implement in a video game without it being completely horrible.

If they can't get it in I hope they just scrap mounts altogether.

agreed, pretty useless in my opinion. Why bother with an expensive horse when you can just boost athletics and add speed

At this stage it's likely they just don't want to talk about it yet, if they'll ever do so before release. Perhaps it's being worked on, perhaps we'll have some info later, who knows...

With Havok Behavior, it's probably easier to implement the animations for mounted combat.

Mounted combat worked in mount and blade, well except for lances but Skyrim won't have those so it should work. Who wouldn't want to ride their horse as fast as they can across a field while a dragon breathes a stream of fire behind them?

Never mind Mount and Blade, Assassin's Creed, Red Dead Redemption...and those are only the ones that are good. Two Worlds had okay mounted combat.

I guess if you're optimistic you could say that all they've announced so far is like Oblivion 1.5 and in the months to come they are going to unleash all the really cool new features like mounted combat, spears, the crafting, hunting, gathering, capes and other stuff. The GI information is at least kind of reassuring in its limited scope.

Put another way, if they take it to E3 and all they can show is dual wielding and dragon shouts, I don't think people will be so pleased; they're definitely pacing the release of new features. Right? :cryvaultboy:

Lack of mouthed combat made horses a joke in Oblivion, donkeys would make more sense than horses. Found horses useable with a mod who gave them pack sadles and let them follow you while you walked.
Any implementation would be better than having to dismount to fight a wolf.

Mount & Blade is a lot of fun, but I'm not sure its example necessarily means that Skyrim can do it. Remember, especially, that mounted combat is pretty much the entire point of M&B - as opposed to something that would be a minor part of Skyrim. As such, I imagine balancing it and making sure it works properly would be a lot harder...

And what about mudcrabs... we haven't heard a thing about them or seen a single screenshot... must mean they aren't in the game. :)

I wouldn't be worried about anything just yet.

I can only guess by the comment made by Todd in one of the G.I. articles in which he says "we're not talking about mounts yet", that at the very least the horse mechanics have been completely revamped. There may even be additional mounts in-game and maybe even mounted combat(hopefully). The fact that it is being intentionally avoided and alluded to at the same time though, makes me think that the work they've done and the improvements they've made to the horses and mounted travel/combat system in Skyrim is substantial and worth the wait to see. I mean we all have to admit, Oblivions mounted travel was clunky at best--stiff horse movement, terrible mount and dismount system, and not to mention the stupid horse always getting in the way in fights and always feeling foolishly brave enough to take on a minotaur--sheesh.

as for mounts other than horses, i don't think it would be particularly good. Could horses even live in that environment though? Maybe we'll have giant mountain goats... XD

Well magic doesn't complicate it at all, in fact they should make you have to be skilled enough not to accidentally hit your horse if they have mounted combat. I think it would be funny to kill my mount and fall on my face for it, or only hurt it and have it buck me off in panic because I stupidly lit its head on fire...
