Avoiding Talon Company Mercenaries

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:39 pm

My explosives skill is at 24, perhaps I can disarm the Megaton bomb now if I pop a Mentats. There is only one problem, Mr. Burke. If I render the bomb impotent then Mr. Burke will lose his hard on, leave town, and send the Talon Company Mercs after me. I'd rather not deal with any of these so soon because my small guns skill is at 12 and the Chinese officer's sword does not block bullets. What if I caused Mr. Burke to be deceased and cut off his member and THEN disarmed the bomb? No future Talon Co. worries?

Only some of the Talon Mercs come after you because of Mr. Burke.

But mostly they just get a contract on you from an unknown source if your Karma is too high.

So if you have high Karma you'll have to deal with the Mercs even if you never go near Mr. Burke or the Bomb.

One squad still comes after you, even if you kill Burke first.

If you want to avoid other encounters with them, make sure your karma stays at neutral or below (of course, if your karma is evil, the Regulators come after you).

Also, stay away from locations where they patrol.

Spoiler
Fort Bannister, the Talon base just west of Grayditch, behind the Corvega Factory, the Capitol Building, Reclining Groves Resort Homes, outside of Anacostia Metro Station, to name a few.

You've seriously got to get that Small Guns skill up as fast as you can.

Thanks guys! I think I can deal with just one single squad because I have Amy Wong, who has an assault rifle and who can hire a bodyguard for herself.

I know, and with FWE and MMM as well. I though I could handle it but I was wrong. Only at level 3, though. Sadly, 4 intelligence. I can take Gun Nut perk next level.

That's what I'd do, plus dump every skill point you get at your next level up into Small Guns.

Melée and sneak work well too. To bad that it wouldn't help you against Talon Company, considering they only attack you when your leaving a building. Well, mostly. Some have caught up while I was on the road.

Eh, he's running FWE which means they will be pretty damn dangerous.

There seems to be a squad outside Super-Duper Mart a lot as well.

With a Small Guns skill of 12 and FWE, I wouldn't call them "pushovers" myself.

Yeah if you are running FWE default settings on a low level character alone and they surprise you when you exit a building or dungeon you've got a serious problem. :flamethrower:

With a small guns or Melee skill at 30+, and some decent armor (combat armor, if you can afford it), the mercs shouldn't pose as much of a threat for you.

1st time they jumped me I ran back inside where I'd just come out of (actually did this second time too, and I was half expecting them then )
Here what I did

Spoiler
Necked some buffout and psyco and then a stealth boy and ran past them. When further away I lobbed a grenade then RAN AWAY!
I was able to pick them off 1-by-1 from a distance later, although this won't help if your small guns svcks :(

Also, Gun Nut is a terrible perk, I've been regretting taking it since level 2, intense training to get intelligence up would be better. Any perk which adds skil points are not very good really!

It's FWE, even crap guns do huge damage, and Talon Co. don't use crap guns.

They're not pushovers until you're atleast Level 8 and they're not pushovers with FWE until Level 20 and he's Level 3.

You should try and stay away from D.C. and the road to the Nuka Cola Factory (that's where I first ran into them... Was walking in my Vault 101 suit, not a care in the world and they jumped me... killed me in three shots from a chinese assault rifle) try killing weaker enemies to the north or northeast (to avoid supermutnats) until your skill is high enough to deal with them...

Also
Spoiler

Did you get the sniper rifle from the hollowed out rock?

Yes I did. It was in bad condition but it did its job in what I'm about to describe. The targeting reticule is a bit unwieldly, though. I'm level 8 now, very close to level 9, and I've intentionally wasted five perks on gun nut to get my small guns skill up to 80. Also because I'm stupid. I also took a perk that doubles my damage if I stand on a table or chair. Anyway, to the Northwest of Megaton, just South of that unmarked, unnamed ghoul settlement I found Fort Bannister which was replete with dozens of these Talon reprobates. The sniper gun was great for taking out the lookout watch. And then Amy Wong and I infiltrated the base and annihilated them, including that Commander Jabsco or whatever his name is.

Spoiler
He has a missile launcher and a Mr. Gutsey assassin-bot. And when the fight begins the game spawns Talon Mercs through the door behind you even if you cleared the area. Wtf is that?

During my time in Fort Bannister I saw so many weapons used against us, but none could stand against my H&K CAWS.

I think that's a glitch... Since your on PC it should be easy to find a patch if it's worse than it sounds.

Talon mercs are a serious threat to a low level player. I wandered off into DC yesterday, at level 4 and armed only with a Hunting Rifle. I stumbled across a group of three wielding a Chinese Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle and Missile Launcher.

It didn't last long...:(

My advice if you have DLC is join the military(operation Anchorage) go through the sim then come back to the wasteland. Youll reach at least lvl 8-9 before leaving the sim and easiest access to the most powerful power amor and some great weapons

"While on patrol" Talon Company? Had a run in with them before. Once they tried to recon the Citadel when i was a lowly Knight, we chased them off though. Then i met them on patrol, almost became a blood bath, they tried to pick a fight with us, and some initiate jumped one of them when they threw insults at us. Since i became a Paladin, and moved onto a different Bunker, my runs ins have been fewer, but now i respect them, granted they will put a bullet in your head if the pay is right, but they are not totally heartless, not all of them, they have been fighting the Mutants and that in my book makes them all right in my book. In my eyes, they are just another merc company, just watch it around them, and hope you don't get a contract put out on you.

(Talon Company Ambush spots are a pain in the butt until your the right level, about level 8-9, until then, watch out and be cautious around subway entrances, and some places like Super-duper mart, and Dot's Diner by the Jury Street metro for example. But their equipment is good for a cap or two, or use if you need it, IMHO)
