AVP Discussion

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:47 pm

hehe, i'm in the AVP festive spirit.

Gateway is now my new favorite map, it's like 3 environments (Alien caves, predator jungle, marine base) rolled into one! Awesome!

It's definitely one of my favorites also, along with Jungle (I think that's it's name..). I've only been able to play on Gateway once though, it doesn't seem like many people choose it. :meh:

Just played as the predator, so satisfying to stab a marine through the spine and get away without getting shot/hit by someone else. The combi stick is awesome, and have managed to own a lot of people with it. Just getting used to the battle disc, as eveytime i use it someone see me and kills me. Gateway is a great map, especially on infestation, get 3 other people and walk around the caves and jungle when there are a lot of xeno's its blooming tense at times.

I haven't had the chance to play on Gateway yet. I've played Refinery, Jungle, Ruins and Pyramid so far. It seems like player matches are definitely the way to go, it's much better having a server browser and being able to stay in the lobby after the game ends. I have no idea why they don't allow that in ranked games.

Just got done playing Survivor alone of Masoleum (sp?). Not a good idea with most of the map being pitch black. Involved alot of running around the map. Got fifty kills, and then acid got me :(

I tend to find over-hyped games get the best. While this has already been said, its mostly like this:

Big Game, Halo or CoD: "...But these problems are greatly overshadowed by..."

Small Game, AVP or The Saboteur: "...But these problems greatly weigh the game down..."

According to GameInformer, MW2 gets a 9.75, while Dragon Age gets an 8. EIGHT! This is an outrage!

Then don't listen to reviews so religiously.

I don't. Playing the game is the best review.

This is something that made me smile :)

When you see The Rookie in the dropship in the first Marine cutscene, he looks nice and fresh, not a single mark on him.
When you see him in the last few cutscenes, his nose looks broken and his face is bruised and battered. I'm a svcker for the little things in games.

Same here. When I saw my face I was like, "damn... ". Anyone else think the Marine boss fight was terrible though?

Boss fights were fun but terribly easy, for the marine the bestr optino was the trusty grende launcher that i use a lot. For the predator you use a combination of the comib stick, plasma caster and discs, with a bit of melee. And for the aline its melee, run away and heal repeat. Ive only done it on normal mode though, don't know if they get tougher the higher you go.

My first thoughts of the game:

Pretty boring box art. There's got to be an easier way than these damn security stickers, I just know it's going to leave a mark. Two discs? Haven't seen that in a while. Steam activation, that's good. I like buying retail, but Steam is great for updates. I wonder how long it takes to install.

You're not likely to hear anything more until I've finished, so savour this while you can. :P

ED: Oh, hey. A manual!

Never mind. It's a lousy manual. Again...

Melee for the Predator boss fight? If you try to go toe-to-toe with it you'll die almost instantly, that's why the game even tells you that you have to defeat it with your ranged weapons.

Rented it and I have to say I'm severely disappointed. Literally everything was fail in comparison to AvP 2. Also, I appreciate the effort to give Humans a chance, but now they are seriously over powered.

The Marines are definately not overpowered. The Predators are the "best," but it wall depends on what you are most comfortable with.

Am I the only person who enjoyed the all the boss fights? (apart from the Predalien and Marine Praetorian one)

It never felt so awesome to be flung over a predators shoulder as an alien, or to back hand another predator when he goes for a TK with the marine.

That bridge battle at the end with the sentry was epic!

I meant melee for the boss fight when you play as the alien. And i did attempt to smack him with the butt of my gun as the marine aswell :D

I just keep finding myslef playing the predator campaign over and over, its so satisfying picking these thick headed marines off one by one, and i have been finding ingenious ways to kill them hehehe...

Well those campaigns were rather disappointing. Very few characters, very little exposition and no clear idea of what you're doing beyond your next objective. I guess I was just too used to AvP2, and was wrong to expect Rebellion to follow Monolith's example.

Still, I think they got the atmosphere for the three species right, more-or-less. There are a few exceptions, such when the Marine goes outside and it's the middle of the day. Not going to find many Aliens out at that hour, for obvious reasons. Still, combat was great fun, especially stalking humans as the Alien or Predator. Sure there's no real danger to it, but that makes it ripe for self-imposed challenges.

I'm rather disappointed by the length of both the game and individual levels. I suppose eight hours isn't bad, but that's a first-run which normally takes much longer than average. Then each section is too short, for example one moment you're stalking humans, then wading through aliens, then back again. Sure it's good to mix it up, but every now and then you just want to do one or the other without interruption.

Still, it's not bad. Just not anything special. Which is odd when you consider that by it's very concept it's supposed to be something different.

I have just discovered a terrible truth. Unlike the rest of us, this game does not pretend that the AvP films never existed. 'Audio Log: Weyland, K.B. 14' is the offending item. I can forgive many of this games flaws, but this move is unconscionable. A travesty. More terrible than terrible. This is not a crime against nature, this is a crime against good taste.

Also, they promised a reward for collecting all the audio logs, and all I got was this stupid achievement. What a gyp.

I haven't been able to figure out what kind of protection does the game's european version use? :stare:

Steam? (Instant Deal-breaker)
Internet Connection Required? (Instant Deal-breaker)
CD-Key?
Other, what?

I'm itching to get this game but I have a thing against intrusive copy-protection methods. <_<

I just read the review on G4TV. Some parts of the review that really made it unreliable:

The story unfurls like a continuation of the god-awful movies, in which Lance Henrikson plays the head of the self-serving and vile Weyland-Yutani corporation.

It has every tired, overused shooter clich? from the late '90s. You wake up alone, with only a useless pistol, while some faceless entity keeps barking orders at you. Worse, you dont even get a name or a voice. Your character is just called "Rookie" and never speaks. He can only carry two other weapons, and his progress is completely linear (Call of Duty anyone?. Humans always did seem extraneous in a war between the two ultimate sci-fi predators, but the developers seem determined to prove how weak and ineffective humans are here.

Whats worse is that Rebellion has actually made the Predator feel wimpy. Although it's hard to imagine, your Predator is weak, goes on the hunt barely equipped, and only gets new weapons as the story dictates. He also has to find energy sources to svck up to power his gear, which is a suspect game mechanic at best.

Really? You could not find a better person to write a review?
