Awfull Windhelm Textures

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 9:03 am

Windhelm is my favourite city except for the fact that 80% of it looks like it was textured in ms paint. Alot of the snow textures seem to be pretty bad as well, eg the wood floors outside dawnstar, again it looks like ms paint. Can't wait for a patch, this game is my all time favourite!

I've got a feeling the patch isn't going to fix those things.

I'd love to be wrong though.

Yeah, doubt they are going to patch in better textures. Most of what you see in that regard is not a bug, but rather comprises made to get the game to run on outdated tech.

Close up low res textures and this horrid snow is also on the PC version with top of the range hardware. It should be fixed, even if it is improved slightly, and of course to a higher extent for PC users.

That's because it is a console port.

I don't disagree, but I will not loose faith in a well established game development company when regarding achievable fixes. (My opinion). Lets be optimistic here. They are aware this is disheartening and I'm sure they will make some sort of adequate improvement.

I have been suffering with the low-textures bug. I have to believe it is an unintended technical fault for two reasons: 1) Many people who play from the disc report seeing better textures, and I've seen screenshots of the better textures to prove it; and 2) Bethesda have responded to the problem. Sure their explanations sound a bit vague, but it looks like a problem they didn't intend.

Whether the 1.2 patch can fix it? I don't know. I have a nasty feeling that some Xbox 360 models simply have a data bandwidth problem that Bethesda didn't test properly. If you get higher-textures from the disc you might be lucky. But for my Xbox 360 - which gets the low textures even from the disc - I don't want to be optimistic about the patch.

I can mostly try to ignore the bad textures and just enjoy the game... blurry wood here, blurry stone there, blurry hands... whatever, it's still an awesome game. But unfortunately Windhelm is in a whole other league of awful. I don't know why Windhelm's textures are even worse than the rest.

Windhelm is a time anomaly, when you enter it show's you how Skyrim would look on a N64 :)

Serious though this city look's like it got [censored] the hardest with the texture bug, your reminded of this fact due to when you fast travel to the city, you spawn with your nose touching the wall.

This is correct as I have seen my bad textures load in correctly from time to time but the leave after 5 mins or so. The 1.2 patch has to fix this, end of story!

I think that this part of the problem they said they were going to be fixing here:

Windhelm, as with all other places I have visited looks gorgeous and crisp. My 55 inch Sony HX923 really brings out the beauty in good graphics, but also the worst in bad ones, so let me assure you, Windhelm should NOT be blurred this way. The game is glitchy sometimes. I have had a save reload after being killed, only to find missing textures altogether, or animations are frozen, like a blowing flag no longer blowing and the rivers having entire sections of texture missing, so they looks se through. It happens.

As for Bethesda saying these textures issues do not occur from playing off the disc, that's rubbish. Maybe not as badly, as the entire install feature of the xbox usually creates texture loading issues with games - I've seen it in Red Dead Redemption and Oblivion, even GTA where sections popped in that didn't on disc. But I have seen textures load up low res before after save reloads when using the disc. So they need to look into it.

I've been avoiding Windhelm in the hope that the patch addresses at least some of the low res textures present in this city. Whenever I'm in Windhelm I just find myself cringing constantly, trying to not look at any of the walls for too long. I really don't think Bethesda meant for Windhelm to look like this.

Windhelm is a mixed bag for me. Not very good when coververed in snow in winter, no too bad during the thaw in spring. Which sums up the texture/graphics of the game. The snow effects tend to be the worst.. However I spent a couple of hours in the snow around Dawnstar and it looked wonderful... winter wonderland wonderful. That Skyrim on the Xbox at the moment...... it gives you tantilising glimpses of how magical it should look, then back to 1990s graphics. For instance I fought a dragon outside Windhelm.... it looked like a poor pvc blow-up one - early Zelda -. Then when I had killed it the proper scaly textures pooped in - so they were there all the time. So hopefully the 1.2 patch wil fix the problem..... However, only the PS3 lag problem has been mentioned in connection with this patch........ We'll see....

Will I buy another Bethesda game on day one? No. Will I buy another Bethesda game again? Depends on whether the graphgics are sorted out with a patch...
