Axe, sword or hammer?

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 6:07 pm

As a juggernaut two-handed monster i like chopping heads of people using a terrifyingly large axe, BUT! Is possibly the perks for hammer and sword better?

Hammer: ignore armor, good for armored opponents but useless (?) against most opponents who do not dress in steel panties

Axe: bleeding damage, good for extra damage but is overkill against monster which u beat to death in two strikes, but might be awesome against bosses!

Sword: Critical hits, great overall which scores more harder hits but not sure if it gives you the averall most bonus damage, which i am looking for.

What should i choose? I am looking towards axes since i guess it gives you more damage against bosses (and thats when you really nees it)

Thanks!!!

I'd go swords, since they're also the fastest. But really, it's a personal choice.

Didn you just answer your question ;) ?
In the end Sword will give you the best overall result. If you want to be better vs specific creatures you just have to bring along more weapons.
If you dont want to spend 6 additional perks to cover all weapon specialities then you go for what is best overall, swords.

The way I see it....

Swords == Vanilla Fantasy

Axes == Brutal Fantasy

Hammers == EPIC Fantasy

I don't want to factor in statistics when all I want to do is have some fun and craft my wolf armor and skyforge steel sword and look good wearing it.

I was using Battleaxes (I like the block stance more than swords and the speed better than war-hammers) until I got my hands on Sky-forged Steel Great-sword, haven't seen anything that does more damage since.

Swords are faster but over all the crit chance and damage with all 3 perks is like one in Barbarian.

Axes are slower than swords but faster than Hammers. Bleed is ok but some things don't bleed and useless if your 1-3 hitting everything.

Hammers are slowest but the highest main base damage of all the weapons and the 50% reduction to armor is sweet, everything has an armor value... yeah.

Hammers would be my choice, I'm playing a Thief / Assassin using Archery but my 1H backup is a Mace LOL

Ebony Axe and Shield here.

But i also carry an extra ebony axe to dualwield them when needed.

Do a lot of dmg with them.. lol... and as long as i time my blocks good, the enemy doesn't do me any dmg.

I love maces highest base damage, + there perk ignores a % of targets armour (max at 75%), and they look cool. Dunno about 2 handers though.

Swords have a higher damage with there crits if you get one (max 20% chance), so max damage increase is 20% (I am summing that crits do 2x damage and that it no ignore armour)

Axes DOT be nice vs a guy with a lot of health or vs mass mobs land a hit on each and let bleed kill them (similar to poisons really). Depends on DOT damage though (cant find any detail on what this DOT is).

Ignoring axes due to DOT being unknown.
I am going to compare swords and maces, maces range from +30% more damage at low end (iron, at this level there's no point using a sword at all) to +14% more damage at the top end Daedric compared to there equivalent sword.
The Break even point where damage per hit is equal with the maxed out crits is Dwarven (this is assuming you do say 100 attacks with each weapon and get 20 crits with the sword).

As for what best it depends on what the armour values of each mob is and what % damage reduction that armour gives and what the attack speed difference between swords and maces are.
Factor in armour and well maces win in every case one the mob got 16.6...7% damage reduction (based on equal attack speed).

So you say that maces is first on the list ones the mob has got 16.6% reduction or more? Or did i misunderstand you

I suspect the math gives the weapons fairly equal dps. For example:

Sword: 20 damage, 1 attack per second = 20dps
Axe: 22 damage, .9 attack per second = 20 dps
Hammer: 25 damage, .8 attack per second = 20 dps

Thus, you should pick your weapon based on roleplaying, kill scenes, and/or opponents.

Swords are probably best against low health opponents like mages, because you could get a one-hit crit. They could tend to be unpredictable. For example, you could rush into a fight against multiple opponents, get 0 crits and die, reload, and crit the first two the next fight for an easy win. Same strategy, different result. The sword through the body kill is awesome, but as a painted-face Nord, you might want to avoid looking like a Scot carrying a Claymore.

Axes will be best against high health, low armor. They might also be the best against enemies using shields that block frequently. I find the kill scenes lackluster compared to the others. Classic weapon of a dwarf, but you aren't playing a dwarf, are you?

Hammers will smash down the heavy armor 2H opponent trying to power bash your skull in. I also suspect they are great against dragons. I like the kill scene better than axes. If you want to be worshipped as a god like Talos dragonborn, slap a shock enchantment on that hammer and call yourself Thor. If you prefer to live in the TES world rather than the Norse mythology world, maybe stick with swords or axes, or at least don't take enchanting.

Enchantments are another consideration. Here I think this pushes us toward swords. The faster swing speed means more applications on hard to kill opponents, while the crits mean fewer applications on enemies you will kill quickly (by virtue of critting). This puts your charges to maximum effect on the enemies you need them to hit.
