Axes vs. Spears

Post » Thu Dec 02, 2010 10:16 am

Because, in memory of the original it has to be here.

There is just no contest, a spear is faster and more versatile. It's also easier to outfit your militia with. Where's the contest?

Spears can't chop down trees to build a shelter, break more easily, and are less useful in close quarters. Axes win.

Who needs to cut down trees? You have spears, draqe your cloaks over them and boom, shelter.

A spear haft is as thick and dense as an axe haft if not more so, an axehead is very little use on its own. Also a short spear can be used much like a quarter staff in close quarters, very devastating stuff.

I'll take an axe over a quarterstaff any day as far as damage goes. A spear haft is longer, and therefore more brittle at equal lenghts. Low-ranking soldiers usually can't afford cloaks, and even the officers who do won't get far with that kind of shelter if they have to spend a week in the snow.

Cloaks were standard issue, especially in a winter army. If they didn't have canvas and furs for their tents they'd be dead no matter how much wood they could cut so spears would go lovely regardless.

Not true, there would have been flex in a longer haft, especially with young oak, thus they were less likely to break.

As far as damage well they both do 1d8 sonny jim so meh to that. :look:

A glaive? Japanese weapons are nice and all but they're so completely over done in geek culture that they now bore me.

I'm a big fan of both the scimitar and the horse cavalry sabre when it comes to swords.

I dislike all kind of tools that could potencially make me bleed.

What are you discussing, anyway?

In Baldur's Gate games I usually go for scimitars and long swords.

Well back in the old gamesas forums there was over 30 pages of a thread called axes vs. spears and I decided to bring it back.

Kantanas are nice in BG but magic ones are rare and I'm over japanese flavouring in my games.

As to what we're discussing, I think this has turned into a general weapon thread, in reality and in games.

What was the guy's name again, Ozzi? Kantanas and shimitars ftw!

But yeah, Celestial Fury was pretty much the only reason they left for the Guarded compound to be in the game.
