[RELz] Ayleid Loot EXtended - ALEX

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:18 pm

Have http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22795 and http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=5362 and read on!
This mod is also available in http://hazevalley.ru/downloads.php?page_id=212.

NEWS: 2009/03/02 - Updated to version 1.2 with wonderful icons by Washington!

From the readme:

This mod adds a bunch of new ayleid clutter to the game, but rather than just add it for sale at one or more vendors I have made it as loot that can be obtained through exploration and thievery. The items can still be purchased from some vendors, but stock is erratic as the items are hard to come by.

Most items are placed inside new containers that can be found in many ayleid ruins. These containers are placed in out of the way corners where people have never noticed them before, so if you can't find any then you're not looking hard enough. The placement of these containers is what makes this mod fun for me: they are placed in some seriously inconvenient places. If you can see a container but cannot work out how to access it, consider obtaining access to these magic effects via spells, potions or scrolls: telekinesis, water walking, water breathing, fortify acrobatics, fortify speed and light. I have tested that all the most inconvenient containers are accessible, but I make no promises about how *easy* it is to access them, or even find them! Some of them are crammed into very inconvenient corners.

For players of a more devious nature I have also provided some options for acquiring some (not all) of the new items by theft. There are a couple of NPCs in the game with small (but quite valuable) collections in their homes. Keep an eye out!

Finally, there is a simple mini-quest. There's no quest log, no quest marker and no dialogue, but there are a couple of letters, a key and a lost chest of valuables.

As a warning note: players without access to the magic effects I have listed may find it difficult to find or access more than a handful of the new containers. Also players who don't check their environment carefully may never see any of these chests. This is intentional. If you have the esp installed and cannot find any chests then you're most likely just not looking carefully enough.

Feedback that's welcome:

Missing files in the download archive!
Typos in the readme/documentation.
Bugs in the mod (including things like clipping or dirty/unnecessary edits).
Info about modders' resources for additional ayleid clutter.
Are there too many or too few chests? (Currently 26 chests spread over the 54 vanilla ayleid ruins)
Are loot drops too rare and/or too lucrative when you get them? (Currently you tend to only get the occasional lucky hit, but the lucky hits are quite generous)
Are items reasonably priced?

Feedback I don't need:

"I have this great idea...": so do I.
"You could ask XXX if you can use his resources.": yes, I could, but I can do other things too: I only want info about proper modders' resources.
"I can't find any of these chests": read the readme.
"It's too hard": tough.
"It's too easy": make it yourself then.
"My grandmother ate my hamster after she played this": uuuuuh, wha?

Info on compatibility:

This mod adds chests to numerous vanilla aylieid ruins, adds clutter items and chests to two vanilla NPCs' houses and adds a couple of items to one vanilla NPC's inventory (bash tag included to help make sure the items will appear in your game). Any other mod(s) changing these records can potentially conflict.

Screens (will be updated soon for the new icons):

As the point of this mod is that the loot has to be searched for and found, all screens of item placement are potential spoilers (i.e. you might say "I know that place!" and then not have the "fun" of struggling to find that chest). You are warned.

What a great idea... I have to reinstall and restart Oblivion after building a new PC this coming weekend due to the death of my hard drive. I have always loved seeking out and exploring all the Ayleid ruins, so I will bookmark and download this... sounds like it will suit my game just great. :) Thanks!

Glad you like the concept and I hope you like the execution too. As stated in the initial post: constructive feedback is very welcome, so post with your feelings.

Hope you enjoy it. Hahah! I hope you *find* some of it. :biglaugh:

Immersion? If it does, great! It wasn't aimed in that area, but anything improved (even by accident) is a good thing, right? :hehe:

Thankyou! I hope you enjoy it too.

Screens have been added to the first post, I'm uploading screens to the TESNexus site now. I'll get things sorted at PES asap.

I wonder how long it'll take before someone finds a chest...?

Feedback I don't need:

At the moment the new items don't have their own icons (that's being worked on), so no need to comment about that.

If you need help, I would be glad to give you a hand... :)

Some of the stuff's not easy to find: I "know" exactly where everything is, but I still spent several minutes trying to locate some of the harder-to-find chests in-game to check they were genuinely reachable. On the other hand some of the easier-to-spot chests are reasonably obvious if you have your eyes open and are actually looking for things. I should mention there's a good variety of locks on these things, probably half are unlocked, but the more obvious it is the harder the lock's likely to be: it is designed for people with more skills than just plain combat, after all. Everything within reach of ground level is locked to stop any NPC AI routines from nabbing the contents.

Awesome job, Vacuity.

Now if I get a chance to actually play Oblivion instead of modding it.....

I know the feeling. I went back to II last night and was horrified to remember just how much effort I have put into that. II probably has hundreds of hours of work put into it, most likely more than I've ever spent playing the game...

If you need help, I would be glad to give you a hand... :)

Thanks for the offer. At the moment I have them "on order". I'll be honest though; does anyone know of a step-by-step guide to making icons? It'd be kinda handy to be able to make this kind of thing myself and hopefully wouldn't require too much artistic flair. After all, if you make a modder some icons you help him once. If you help a modder learn how to make icons you help him with lots of his mods. Right? :icecream:
I don't have photoshop, but I *do* have gimp. I even used it a few times long ago when I was doing my PhD, so uhh, still a noob user.

Well, I use Photoshop and I haven't used Gimp. I do it like this:
- load the mod in the CS, load some interior cell and turn lights on
- then I draw an item adjust it the way I want to, take a screenshot and paste it in IrfanView and save it
- then replace the item for another by using Edit>search&replace (so that the view stays the same)
After that, I fire up the Photoshop:
- load all those screenshots
- cut them to approximate squares
- select the gray background, then press Ctrl+Shift+i (in photoshop) to inverse the selection
- create new channel, and paint the icon white and the background black (in the new alpha channel)
- fix if anything needs to be fixed and paint background to that Oblivion tan colour
- resize the image to 64?64 pixels
- and finally, save (type must be explicit or 1-bit alpha, with no mip-maps)

I hope that it helps!

That is one way of doing it, I am doing it nifskope way, with white background screenshot, cut and paste, into new image..But it is very time consuming in general to make icon themselves..even doing it your way also..Have not found any faster way yet either..other than nifskope or in game pic to work from..

I didn't know that you can change background in Nifskope? What about the axis?

Yes, it's time-consuming, but when you make a whole batch of them, it becomes almost automatized.

Me too.. I like having nice custom icons, that's why I offered help so that I can use it.

Yes, you can change the background color - go to render, settings, change background color..Axis you can rotate things in nifskope no problem, just hit once the angle view from the top..

Yes very time consuming so far, but the end result is high rez icon's..

It's not like there are *no* icons, it's just that the icons are vanilla icons and so don't make a great visual match for the actual items.

Yes, it's time-consuming, but when you make a whole batch of them, it becomes almost automatized.

Try making, what? nine hundred enchanted weapons? *That* is mindless automation for you... And I've still got the armour to do.

I'll have a go at trying to make icons myself sometime soon, but I really have to get II updated first and I'm kinda waiting to see whether anyone reports problems with ALEX.

Here is the tutorial I use when making icons... (http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/GIMP:_Creating_Inventory_Icons)

There are a few steps that the guide doesnt cover... Corepc enlightened me to paint.net for making the icons CS friendly.

The help making the icons I willingly accept this time around (in fact I asked for help with them). But a good tutorial I can use next time is very helpful and makes various other things that little more feasible to do in the future as I won't have to worry about asking people for help making icons again. Maybe.

So, uhh, anyone found anything in the mod yet?

Thank you! Just glad I could help :). So I fired up my oblivion this morning all ready to find these beauties, bought my telekinesis spell, grabbed all my goodies.......and stopped. My mysticism was 8  So I'm working my skills atm. That'll teach me to just wack things with my sword! Oh, I did find a staff with it on there, but somehow I don't think 10ft will be enough for getting these, worth a try though!
