Ayleid Word Meanings/Speculation

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:57 am

I am currently working on an Ayleid-themed home/quest mod and I'm trying to work out some names of specific places to be included.

Right now, I'm having trouble finding a way to express two places in particular, and could use some help with any possible translations I've missed, or any speculation on creating some 'new' Ayleid words.

I'll just say for now that I'm looking to find translations for two places out of these I'll list here. I'm trying to follow an elemental theme for the set as a whole.

Mafregarlasi - Caverns of Frost
Molaggarlasi - Caverns of Fire
Lattagarlasi - Caverns of Light
Morgarlasi - Caverns of Dark (Dark as in Evil, as opposed to: Lor - Dark)
Balgarlasi - Caverns of Stone
Kyndgarlasi - Caverns of Sky (This is the closest thing I could find for Wind or Air)
??? - Caverns of Lightning/Thunder
??? - Caverns of Water

I've looked at both the UESP Ayleid wiki page and the Imperial Library for all of these, but cannot find proper names for the last two. :(

The only solution I have so far, would be to try to derive 'new' words from known Ayleid words as an attempt to stay lore friendly.

Belle means thunderous, according to the Imperial Library's translation, so what are some thoughts on attempting to derive 'Bel' from it to mean thunder? :poke:

Unfortunately for the second, I can't find anything on water, except for 'Relleis'(stream, river) so I'm a little more stumped with that one.

I appreciate any help any of you can provide and hope that I've just missed something! If not, I'd love to hear some speculation for some 'new' words to try to patch up lore for this. :)

Borrow words from Quenya or Sindarin. Umaril did that, too. ;) Aside from that, perhaps http://lorannarp.pbworks.com/Nalions-Ayleid-Dictionary also helps a little.

Or write Proweler a PM. He seems to be inactive at the moment, but his ayleid language knowledge is very good, AFAIK.

Although it pains me to say such, my lord Julianos has never deigned me worthy of any Ayleidic linguistic prowess. Nonetheless, the mighty JHUNAL has seen fit to allow he who is quite possibly the greatest TES linguist (short of MK himself) to have responded to your original post, and that someone is Nalion, with Prowler coming in a close second.

I am, unfortunately, much more of a liability than an asset, although I must profess that I have pondered seriously expanding the breadth of my TES language skills, for although I can communicate through the language medium that you are reading at the moment, I fall far short of my namesake due to being completely inferior to so many others in their usage of so many other words.

Thus, you have given me a new quest, serjo, and I thank you for it. May JHUNAL illuminate both of our searches, for I remain...

Yours in the Scrolls (so long as they are written in English :shakehead: ),

Instant bookmark! Thank you Nalion, I'll have a look at those as well.
