The fact that you move a lot slower when backpeddling is still true, but I guess with a slow-moving, slow-swinging opponent while fighting at range you can still make it work. I would assume that kiting still has to exist in some form for ranged fighters, and, like others have said, it's probably only viable there for a combination of reasons; slow moving, slow swinging opponent vs. an attack that momentarily stuns your opponent. That said journalist was probably playing on an easier difficulty and could afford to eat a few clean shots may have helped.
