backpedaling alive and kicking

Sure, slow down the mob via some frost spell or something. But in OB your backpedal speed was the same as your running forward speed. Means that nothing could ever catch you. You could solo the hardest mobs by just backpedal/fireballing from a distance. Was a little ridiculous.
its an RPG, if a mage cant kite, what good is he?

Well the only way to fully stop this from happening is to make enemies much faster than players

RELEASE THE DEATHCLAWS

Wait did Oblivion even have a fast type of enemy that didn't come to a complete stop to attempt to attack you? I can only think of Scalons and mountain lions.

If they just have a sword, they are just going to repeatedly swing at you, missing pretty much every time if you can backpedal. Your exploiting the AI, how can you not see that? I'm not saying your cheating, your exploiting. There is a difference.

Plus, you can't really compare the combat in an FPS to the combat in an RPG. They are, most of the time, completely different.

I see we're not going to agree on this, but I would like to know what your resolution would be.

The fact that you move a lot slower when backpeddling is still true, but I guess with a slow-moving, slow-swinging opponent while fighting at range you can still make it work. I would assume that kiting still has to exist in some form for ranged fighters, and, like others have said, it's probably only viable there for a combination of reasons; slow moving, slow swinging opponent vs. an attack that momentarily stuns your opponent. That said journalist was probably playing on an easier difficulty and could afford to eat a few clean shots may have helped.

Sounds like it was a bit of strafe as well.

I think they nerfed backpedalling, but didn't make it completely non-viable. Supposedly it's possible to trip when backing up fast though so there are some balance chances there.

In the end just don't use the tactic. Done and ... done.

Ha! Really? That's cool.

*backpedals from some epic monster and trips*
*Monster lunges*
*manages to get sword up and monster lunges directly onto the sword*
