Backwards Windmill in Trailer

Post » Fri Feb 25, 2011 3:45 am

I considered this as well....but if you pay close attention to the guy chopping wood infront of the windmill you notice that he is actually chopping it. If it were reveresed the wood would be coming back together.

No, I know its not rewinding. I mean the picture is flipped. Right is left and left is right, ya know? Its a possablilty, but I'm not really sure.

There's a difference between flipping and rewinding.

Wind direction changes constantly, extremely simple concept.

If you guys are whining about this just wait until you see the dwemer windmills, the blades are on top of the roof and they hover.

This is by no means whining, this is pointing out imperfections. This is what constructive criticism means.

Kept hitting the refresh button while the Bethesda Senior Programmer was reading this topic, hoping to see a reply... Oh well, he's probably busy fixing the problem and doing research on windmills.

I can't help feeling that if one person hadn't mentioned it the world would be a better place right now

I don't understand the needless defending of Bethesda. The [censored] up. They probably realize this.

It might not be a big deal to you, and probably not to anyone else, but it is annoying to those of us who live in areas where we see windmills every day. Its the same reason horses' saddles shouldn't be backwards, or doors opening towards the outside of the room. To anyone who pays attention, it becomes an annoying detraction from the game world, and that isn't a good thing to developers.

There's nothing wrong with it. Scene was flipped for trailer purposes.

The windmill is practicing its right to free will. You aren't the boss of windmills, you can't tell it which way is forward or backwards.

 win.

It's not a big deal let alone a deal breaker but it doesn't mean we have to defend a flaw just because it was made by our favorite game developer. Uday explained the mechanics quite well, read his post.

I know the way the wind is coming because the trailing edge is the one that is leading. If it is merely the angle of the blades that is causing it then whoever built the windmill didnt know what they were doing. I assume that even in this fantasy world that those who took the time to build such a machine would take the time to do it correctly.

Most windmills can be rotated so that the wind hits the blades from the front. That way, the leading edge will always cut in to the wind. If they can't, they certainly wouldnt be built in the manner that the one in the trailer is built. There are various designs that function best under particular conditions.

Also, it's a lie that all windmills in Ireland spin the opposite direction from ones in Holland. Like I said, there are various designs that dictate the rotation of the blades. You will find counterclockwise and clockwise spinning windmills all over the world. What you will never find is one where the trailing edge cuts in to the wind...that is to say, that the trailing edge is the one that is leading. (unless the design is like one I pointed out in my previous post, where the trailing and leading edge are the same width. In that case the direction of the wind and angle of the blades are what determine the spin)

wind changing direction won't cause the mill to turn in the direction of the sails, (in this case counterclockwise). See Bernoulli's principle...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernoulli%27s_principle

Doesn't matter which way the wind comes from, the placement of the sails/shutters relative to the sweep indicates that this particular windmill should be rotating clockwise.

You're obviously not qualified to comment on this thread.

The windmill is actually spinning backwards becaue a gear broke and the grain hoist, which was full, fell to the floor. Dont wory it will stop spinning in a moment.
new quest: retrieve new gear to repair windmill or towns economy will crumble.

The windmill blades are completely stationary, it's the whole of the elder scrolls universe that's rotating the wrong way around them.

I ask for your patience because this is of great interest to me now.

I still don't know how you know which way the wind is coming from in the video. How do you know the sails are not being driven from the opposite direction. That is my question. I know I'm slow to get somethings sorted in my brain and this is one I am not getting. I sure do want to.

wind boy: Do not try and blow the wind. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
wind boy: There is no wind.
Neo: There is no wind?
wind boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the wind that blows, it is only yourself.

I know how windmills work and I didn't catch it. Noticing the blades facing the wrong way has nothing to do with knowing how the machine is supposed to work. And for all intents and purposes, the windmill is working properly. The blades are spinning, moving the grind wheel, crushing the grains. I see no flaw in its mechanics.

This.

I agree it should be spinning the other way, but I guess this can be fixed in no time. In fact I guess it's already fixed, this problem has been pointed as soon as the trailer went online.

what about the fact that the wind is coming from the other side DUH?
