Backwards Windmill in Trailer

Post » Fri Feb 25, 2011 12:33 am

By generating power, I mean ANY form of power, including turning wheels, cogs, gears, and anything else. If it's causing something to move that otherwise wouldn't, it's generating power.

All i noticed was that the blades are facing towards the direction they are moving instead of away... And if they are set in an outwards manner, then they could be catching air and turning. Probably not as efficiently as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM8PHGwGObI&feature=related but what does it matter?

Also, if its turning, then it must be turning the gears, and I right? If so, then it should be able to turn a griding stone.

Simple solution.. reverse it or reverse the blades, right?

The windmill in the trailer isn't generating power... It's turning a grinding wheel.

Power and electricity are VASTLY different. The act of the grind wheel crushing the grains is a form of power generation and release.

Because most people probably aren't familiar with how windmills work IRL?

I know how windmills work and I didn't catch it. Noticing the blades facing the wrong way has nothing to do with knowing how the machine is supposed to work. And for all intents and purposes, the windmill is working properly. The blades are spinning, moving the grind wheel, crushing the grains. I see no flaw in its mechanics.

The windmill is practicing its right to free will. You aren't the boss of windmills, you can't tell it which way is forward or backwards.

Uhhh....

He's actually correct.

Nice catch, I could have stared at those blades for years and not notice anything wrong. I was just happy there was a windmill.

It could be our first heroic accomplishment. The mill is spinning backwards and we have to shout FUS RO DA at it until it reverses. That's how everyone will learn we're a true Dovakhiin and not some imposter.

I can't believe this is being discussed again.

Call me weird, but I would get a real kick out of it if Bethesda left this in and then came up with some wacky explanation for why the windmill is spinning the wrong way.

Look at the real world windmill... note the blades angle IN toward the mill? Now look at the blades on this mill... they angle out.

The angle determines direction of spin. Its simple physics. Its bloody simple physics.

Just take a freaking bit of paper and blow on it and see for yourself.

maybe the wind is so strong from the side that it has to blow that

I do believe a windmill can turn either way. Sails are set to turn according to the direction the wind usually comes from. Or am I missing something here?

I thought the same thing. I don't think anything is wrong with the windmill.

Depending on the way the blades are angled, the rotation will vary based on the wind direction.

Hehehe ^^

On a more serious note:

The wind mill turn so it faces "away" from the wind and then it rolls in the direction of the heavier part of it. It'd be wierd if it went the other way.. (runs away to watch the trailer)... AAA MY EYES! Terrible..

the problem is not the direction, per se. You can reverse the spin based on the angle of the blades like others have pointed out. The problem is that the direction the blades are spinning has the sails cutting in to the wind and not the leading edge. The sails of a windmill never cut into the wind, it should always be the leading edge.(The leading edge is the solid piece) Because of how they are made I would bet they would be ripped off or damage the blades if they were forced to. Ortherwise they certainly wouldnt work very well. Not enough lift would be created to spin the blades efficiently.

Edit: Of course, there are some windmills where the trailing and leading edges are equal in width. In that case which is which depends only on the angle of the blades. In the trailer however, the leading edge is what is connected to the arm which connects to the pivot, yet the trailing edge is leading....so it's backwards.

There is a reason all those videos from youtube show dutch windmills with their leading edges cutting in to the wind and not their trailing edges...

Considering the windmill is not on our planet, in our solar system/ galaxy/ universe/ reality, I think we can let the windmill slide

Not really, the basic laws of aerodynamics are the same. I do question why, in a world full of magic, one needs a windmill at all, but if you did, it'd still have to work.

Thats the last straw Bethesda! No Unicorns! No Levitation! And now you have windmills spinning in the opposite directions! This is an absolute outrage and will leave me with no option but to not buy Skyrim.

I kid but honestly I didn't notice or care until your pointed it out. :P

Omg! I never noticed this, unless Bethesda fix this I am not only not buying Skyrim, but I will NEVER buy a TES game again! Furthermore I will be writing a petition so that NOONE else buys their game either!

FFS what is the world coming to when they can't even get a fricken windmill right? Definately the biggest immersion killer...

If everybody took this "Oh, the little things don't matter" view, you'd have a functionally fine game absolutely ruined by lack of detail. How can you, on one hand, praise TES for giving you a detailed world, and then condemn pointing out errors?
