Bad FPS

Post » Thu Apr 07, 2011 8:28 pm

Alright, so I popped Morrowind in yesterday, after not playing it since around September, and I haven't changed anything with my MGE settings, haven't added any new mods. The only thing to my computer I've done is install Fallout New Vegas, and my FPS has dropped by at least 20. Can anybody help me figure this out?

My laptop has an i7 Q720 clocked at 1.60 GHz, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870, and six gigs of Ram. It runs Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and formally Morrowind very smoothly.

Thanks.

Also, can anybody let me know if any of the mods on my list here have been updated recently?

phal's rev186 does knock a few FPS off from rev178 but not 20, bit puzzled by that.

Anyway, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6006 is now up to 6.1, ostar's http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=User.EntriesListing&id=37364 mods have had some updates and there's been some Windows Glow addons, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8835's gives a good list.

Have you installed any windows programs that run in the background since you last played MW? Anti-Virus/spy-ware scanning etc.

I assume your fps in the other games is fine right? If you haven't yet, start up any of those other games and see if they are running fine.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I have the same settings now with the rev186 that I did 3 months ago, so I don't think thats it. Thanks for the mods, I already had MCA 6.1 but the other two were news to me. :)

Well, Steam came from New Vegas, but I made sure I closed it before playing Morrowind. Oblivion runs slightly slower, but Fallout 3 and New Vegas run very well.

Thanks guys.

Have you run CCleaner recently? Also, use http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html before starting the MW .exe. It should significantly boost your FPS.

I gave it a shot, but not really much success there either. I just don't get it. The game ran smoothly before.

Thanks for trying to help though.

I figured it out. My settings in the Catalyst Control Center of my ATI Card were apparently too intense for the Morrowind engine. Thats unfortunate, cause now I'll have to switch them whenever I wanna go back to playing modern games.

What settings did you have forced in Catalyst that you couldn't just set in the game settings? Be aware that settings things in the driver, forcing them at least, can react poorly with some games (there's a reason why they're not available for tweaking, on occasion). It can also cause speed hits, not sure the details on that one. :)

Anisotropic Filtering, and Mipmap Detail. My Morrowind and Oblivion don't look any different. I know Fallout and New Vegas are affected detail wise by the turned down Mipmap, but I can always turn it back up for those two.

It looks like it was the Mipmap detail that was causing the FPS. Hmm, thats odd.
