BAIN sub-package installation order

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 4:16 am

I have a question about installation order of BAIN sub-packages. If a sub-package isn't numbered (like 00 Core --> 01 Optional ESP, etc.) what order does it get installed in? I installed the latest update to AWLS, and the textures package has a lot of unnumbered sub-packages. I added a new sub-package (Window Lighting Gothic Medieval) and numbered it. It is the last of the numbered sub-packages because I know that BAIN overwrites later ordered sub-packages. Will the unnumbered sub-packages take precedence over the numbered ones?

I was going to say Alpha-numerical order (which I am sure has been stated before somewhere) ...

but as you point out when AWLS Brumbek mixed textures is listed in Wrye Bash the alphabetically named come after numerically named, and as per the help file...

"sub-packages are installed in the order they appear" - so, 00 would be overwritten by 01, 01 overwritten by 02.

And if numerical first, as in Brumbeks mixed textures ... alphabetical follow further down the sub-package list, the alphabeticals will overwrite the numerically named sub-packages.

I have always made bains with numerically named sub-packages, and using the wizards for AWLS, I did not give them a second look until now.

In your case if you want yours to overwrite all sub-packages before it you would have to name it starting with z - something

(This is why I like my Install Order to read Highest is visually lower, because it ties in with the order of installation of sub-packages ... bottom of the list (Highest) wins).

Edit: Thankfully this doesn't change my Guides, because I dont use mixed alpha-numeric examples :)

just in case you were curious....
the reason is that in computers (at least generally and is certainly the standard in UIs) numbers are sorted before letters... same as underscores etc. (ie like in Windows Explore defaults sort is )

Thanks PM for the confirmation here, going to include this somewhere in a revamp of the Installers Advanced guide when I get round to it. I remember it being mentioned somewhere (and as noted above from what I remember it may have been in-accurate (or my mind needs a purge cell buffers routine)) but cant put my mouse on it right now ... anyway no matter, at least we have it right before I go preaching it in a PDF

I recall it being mentioned by wrye when he made BAIN and I've put that info into both of my threads on the subject. Found in 3rd paragraph of http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1084204-bain-mod-installation-projects/page__view__findpost__p__15797991

I will now add PM's comment as to why there.

Alt3rnity - feel free to use whatever you want from my thread. I f I can help with yours let me know.
