Bak and OBSE save game files.

Anyone know if I can turn off the following game saves?

GameSave3.bak

GameSave4.obse

Is the Obse game save really needed?

Can I turn off the BAK game saves in the game ini?

Or is this just normal windows bak (back up) file behavior?

I suspect you can't disable .obse save files without harming their associated .ess saves. Then again I've never tried it so might be wrong. BAK saves are another matter. I have not a single one in my save-game directory. I can't give you exact advice on how to keep 'em from being created, since I did noting special to get rid of 'em. I suspect it has something to do with my normal save practices. I have every form of quick- and auto-save disabled, and save via console command rather than the Menu.

I know Oblivion creates a .bak file when quicksaving, and probably when auto saving - where the .bak file is simply a copy of the previous quck/auto save. So if you qucksave just after doing something really stupid, you can rename the .bak to .ess and load that. So I guess the way to get rid of them is to disable quck/auto saves.

As for the .obse file: That one contains all string and array variables that OBSE mods use, and probably some other OBSE specific info. By removing that one (or by not ensuring that the .obse keeps the same name as the accompanying .ess file when renaming) you ensure that you break every OBSE dependent mod that stores data in arrays or strings - which includes all my mods.

For the .bak files, think that's controlled by iSaveGameBackupCount=1 in the Oblivion.ini.

And some of my mods!

Ok, I need to not mess with that then.

It seems to me that my Saves take longer these days then they use to, even with a NEW game when there should be hardly anything to save.
So I was wondering if it was these secondary saves but I guess not.

Thanks!

Oh, hey thanks! I will try this.

That wonderful little .bak file has saved a great deal many of hours thanks to savegame corrupts or times when something goes horribly wrong and I had already saved over my current game save.

yeah...but I do not have that problem.

I have a lean mean load order and I use my own "safe save" mod to prevent corrupt saves and auto manage 4 rotating save game files.
