Balance Mods

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 2:39 pm

I've played Oblivion to the end, but all what I've saw about Morrowind feels much better than TESIV, and now I have it installed with a few mods:

- Morrowind Patch Project
- Texture Fix
- Texture Fix - Bloodmoon
- Official Plugins
- Frostmoth Repaired
- Bloated Morrowind
- Illuminated Windows
- Illuminated Windows - Bloodmoon
- Light the Way
- Light the Way - Bloodmoon
- Pack Guar Corky (self made, makes Cocky a pack guar and gives him sharing and "come" & "stay" commands)
- Mournhold Teleportation Fix
- Postponed Dark Brotherhood Attack
- Solsteim Rumour Fix

In that orther, also I have Morrowind Code Patch and some replacer fixes, Correct UV Rocks, Correct UV Trees and Flora Glow (only the meshes).

Well, now I want a balancer mod, because I know that some aspects of the game are broken, like the economy and certain items stats, I have the following:

- Thaddeus Balanced pack
- Wakim's Game Improvements
- BTB's Game Improvements

I can't decide, the wakim's one seems outdated, being the BTB's one like a upgraded version of it, but I don't know if the Economy Adjuster (by HotFusion) mod is a must for this or not. The Thaddeus pack feels very completed, but some of the plugins adds content that I don't want. Any recomendations for a first time player?

I tend to recommend BTB's Game Improvements, since the mod is quite complete, modular and I like the way he handled some of the imbalances (like alchemy for example). My advice would be to take a look at the Readme file of the mod. After that, if you agree with the philosophy of the author, you can be sure you'll like the mod. (Plus BTB's Readme is quite entertaining to read)

As a first time player a good thing to do would be to just play vanilla, even it's just for a few hours. That way you'll notice what irritates you the most and you could start selecting mods from there. I myself use a combination of Piratelords' Trade Enhancements, Thaddeus Balanced Settings for Crime and Travel costs and BTB's alchemy, equipment and spells. I find Galsiah's Character Development to be an ideal choice to fix the broken levelling system.

OK, I will discard the Walkim's mod, one question, modular means in a single ".esp"?, because the version I have, haves five, and I prefer a single one, but this is not a problem.

Well, I've played it a few hours some time ago, with first time player, I mean that I never have completed the game.

Thanks guys.

Modular means you can pick and choose as you see fit. Take BTB's for example, if there's one part of his mod you'd rather not use, you simpley select all the others and use those. Also, http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html is a very interesting and comprehensive list compiled by BTB, and probably one of the most interesting lists concerning gameplay/balancing.

Oh!, thanks for the explanation.

BTB's Game Improvements is meant to replace Wakim's entirely (hence the name). It also replaces every plugin of Econmy Adjuster *except* the Merchant Skills and the Crime plugins. I have edited versions of both on my site (which fix problems that both originally had), if you're interested

As for the "Daedric Drops" plugin of Economy Adjuster, my edited version of Morrowind Advanced (also found on my site) is meant to replace it. It also functions as something of the "sixth plugin" of BTBGI.

Awesome man, thanks for making these mods. One last question, taking my first mod list, in what order I must put these balancing mods?

I've manually set the dates so that the default load order is the correct one.

Honestly, though, the only thing that *needs* to happen is that the Settigns plugin has to load after the Spells plugin.

It would be nice if someone made a comparision list between the balancers at some point. I still use Wakim's as I already looked over it indepth. I will probably stick with it until I decide to spend time looking over any newer ones.

Wakim's is great, and for my first 2 rounds of Morrowind it was essential. I just started round 3 after a 5 year break. I've been using BTB's mod and it's great.

In previous games, I used Wakim's + Taddeus Balanced Weapons & Armors + Custom tweaks. There are weapon and armor stat issues that Wakim's doesn't cover, and AFAIK BTB's doesn't entirely cover either (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Reach and weights are both off in vanilla, (dagger, short sword, long sword, claymore are all the same length), and the weights are pure fantasy, but neither of these are game-breaking (reach isn't well implemented, anyway).

But, both weapons and armor stats aren't well-balanced in the game, in the sense that there are a few clear winners and very few costs/benefits, and this does effect gameplay, so I like to at least see these stats tweaked.

I cover armor stats for the most part, Daedric weapons stats, and enchantments/values across the board. The only thing I don't really do is edit the stats of weapons.

Thanks for the correction. I really appreciate your mods--they're at the top of my essentials lists--and your guide.

I've been meaning to dump the armor stats and look at 'em, but I've been trying to save some time to actually play the game.

There are actually a lot of balancing mods. The more popular are mentioned in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1037224-game-rebalancing-mods/, but there are a lot more out there. Browse the download sites to find them.

I personally use Wakim’s Game Improvements, my custom version of Taddeus Balancing Mods, some of HotFusion’s plugins plus some custom mods of mine which are basically tweaked compilations of various balancing mods I played.

BTB’s mod doesn’t suit my gameplay habits and I stick with Taddeus’ mods because it’s the most complete suite available. It also has add-ons for popular armor, weapons & quests mods (available from http://web.archive.org/web/20070703021914/www.tadnan-hideout.com/MW/main.html).

Return to III - Morrowind
