Balancing role-play versus new content

Hey modders,

I'm not yet on the PC but have been considering it seriously. I realized there's a fundamental challenge to role-playing when new and amazing additions to the game show up constantly so I wanted to ask you modders how you manage it.

Let's say you're playing a build you really like and an amazing mod is released. However, the mod is completely contrary to your build. For example, your build is a pure mage and the mod is for two-handed berserkers (not a great example, but you get the idea, right?).

Do you load a different save and explore the new mod or do you check it out with the current build? Given the vast number of additions, you must spend a fair amount of time just trying new stuff to see what it's like, right? Even though this sounds fun (like getting a surprise present), it must disrupt your current role-play. So what do you do?

Do you finish the role-play and then explore all the new content or do you switch back and forth? I'd hate to disrupt the play-through but I'd also really want to see the latest and greatest. What to do...

Thanks!

If my character doesn't want to do it, I ignore it. I have four characters I switch between playing depending on my mood, they each have different interests so I'll eventually use the mod I loaded but it can always wait until it makes sense in my RP. For instance I have several house and follower mods, one of my characters will probably never own a house and usually quests alone. I have another mod that adds some spells, only one of my characters will probably ever use any content out of this mod. I have some weapon and armor mods that I like, but two of my characters could care less.

Sometimes I just add mods for immersion purposes, I have about a dozen mods that add followers, patrols, interesting npcs, inconsequential npcs, etc just to make the cities and roads feel like there is an actual population and this was before I really started having followers with any of my characters.

I don't really see it as a distraction, I'll eventually .... probably use every mod I have loaded, it just won't be on the same character.

Check out my http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/53344 mod. It was specifically written for pure mages who want to spend some quality time with a two-handed weapon.

But the real answer is to use Wrye Bash's profiles and run multiple characters at the same time. Then you can just switch to the character that suits the mod.
