Banks!

Boo, no. Too many banks in real life already, and they tend to ruin world economy every now and then. I really don't want to have to deal with a Cyrodiil-wide economic crisis caused by a collapse of the empire's financial system on top of having to save the world from dragons and fighting mudcrabs.

This

I play these kinds of games to kinda forget about reality, and god, do I hate the mess with banks in real life. After a while we would all be paying with paper money instead of gold, in Skyrim.

Really though, if there are banks, banks can be robbed in game. I think that can add a wide factor into the system.

If this would be possible I would hope it would require almost level 100 lockpick, level 100 sneak, and 100 alteration magic skill and a very high level companion. If you messed up at all I would hope you would need to be an extremely high level warrior as well.

Bank robberies could quickly unbalance the game if not made extremely difficult.

Too much like real life for me. I can think of other games that are better for this than a high fantasy game. If this was something I wanted to do I'd go play something else.

Banks would be cool. I think that they would be a good center of quest as well. Who doesn't want to help the Fighter's Guild kill capture or defend a bank from those thieves who would rip it off. :bolt:

You wouldn't need to interact with them.

They could be used simply to store money and to create a loanshark situation, as well as the obvious bank robbing.

If there is a hardcoe mode perhaps there could be a Togglable weight option, perhaps .01 lb per septim, but that wouldn't really be necessary.

You could be a collection agent too doing missions for the bank. Hlofgar the Drunken took a huge loan out 7 months ago and hasn't made a single payment, go collect his payment.

As long as the banks adhere to regulations that make taking ridiculous risks a big no no, then it shouldn't be a problem, heh. :)

But yes I would like to see the return of banks. I would like to be able to buy houses and ships at the bank.

That makes more sense than going to the lord of the city and asking to buy a house.
Awesome necromancy on this thread btw.

Yeah I didn't think about that until after I posted :P Then I did a face palm at my own stupidity. On a side note, at least I didn't start another one on the same topic :D

EDIT: Wait, 20 days is considered a necromantic thread? When you said that I was thinking, gosh, this must be a poll for banks in oblivion.

For those complaining about having to go back and forth to deposit and withdrawal: Banks have a variety of locations, and, letters of credit.
To those complaining about Skyrim not feeling like the banking type: Imperial influence.
I for one like weighted gold, and banks. It felt kind of silly at the end of Oblivion, where I had 160,000 Septims on me at any given time, and the same in Morrowind. However, the loan system in Daggerfall was hilariously broken. I shouldn't have been able to buy a 900,000 gp house at level one.

Work for banks

1: have quests to collect people oweing banks
2: quests to screw the general populace
3: quests to protect banks from teh evils of regulation and laws going against banks (aka stealth assassination quests
4: then eventually quests to meet with secret banking groups who control the world

would be epic.

Then they could add a character to the game called "Ron Paul".

Given that cities now have farms, mines, mills and who knows what else, banks seems to fit right in.

In order for banks to be a necessary addition to the game though 2 things must happen.

1) Money must have weight. (Personally i think everything in the game should be realistically weighted and volumetric so we are reasonably limited in what we can carry.)

2) NPC's must have the ability and the inclination to steal our stuff.

Without either of those banks are pointless because if money has no weight I can just carry it and if NPC's can't steal my stuff then i can just put it in my house.

For the sense of immersion, yes. Add weight to money and make it possible to cheat on the bank, then have bounty hunters coming after you to cash in the debts. And I approve of the poster's suggestion above to make NPC's want to be criminal enough to steal your precious coins. But I think you should be able to catch them or see them run or so. A single or a few of these encounters across the game should make sense.

I liked the way they handled it in Nehrim (although I haven't played it for awhile)

And how exactly was it handled in Nehrim?

I do not want banks. They're not good for the game system. It's already kind of irritating to me that the shopkeepers will pay so much less than an item is worth and then on top of that, they have a max they'll pay out regardless of what happens.

I do like the idea of coins having weight - 100 coins to a pound seems reasonable. The player should then have an option of storing the coins someplace however - even in bags we set inside our house or stash somewhere, just like every other NPC in the game.

If banks are installed however, why would any NPC ever carry that much cash or leave buckets of it at their home?

I like the idea of coins having a small and reasonable weight. I also like the idea of the player being able to drop coins or stacks or coins, or perhaps sacks of coins in their house if they so choose too.

Banks would be completely awesome. Not in the sense they work today, though. You shouldn't get interest on your deposit (not that you get that a lot around here anymore either, though), but rather pay to use the banking system as a safe storage location. I did always find it kinda odd that the player character was the only real thief around. Banks should be robbed now and then, as should private homes.
