Banks!

Post » Wed Sep 22, 2010 5:00 am

Alright people. Banks were pretty awesome in Daggerfall. They gave you loans, cashed letters of credit from stores, and financed your purchasing options like houses and ships. Do you want to buy ships? Do you want dozens of housing options? Endorse the epic return of banks! Or discuss banks in this thread and tell me what you want to see.

Two more things to add about banks, one is that other people will be depositing money. This means you could rob the shopkeeper while he's on the way to the bank. The other is that the shopkeepers can have some money to buy your stuff in the store, but keep most of his money at the bank. One or two robberies won't put him out of business this way, and if you wanted to sell him an expensive item, he could get the extra money from his bank to buy it from you so you don't have to take a huge loss on it. The bank will be the means for you to be able to sell your high end gear to shopkeepers.

For roleplayer like myself, keeping track of all the money and loot I make, steal, or profit from is a must. I say a big "Hell Yeah!"

Hell yeah. c: Being able to store gold in a variety of places would be cool too, not just in a bank.

Banks were necessary in Daggerfall, because coin had actual weight. If you wanted to buy an expensive house, you had to load up a cart with gold coin so you could haul it over for purchase. Or you could go to the bank for a letter of credit. It wasn't really feasible to haul around a million gold coins. That's where banks came into play.

As someone who enjoys the concept of way too much realism, I would welcome banks, and weighted coin, and letters of credit for that matter.

I would love to have all of the options of the bank, but I HATE having gold weight. I know that would pretty much destroy the point of having a bank, but I can't stand having to micromanage like that. I liked the way they handled it in Nehrim (although I haven't played it for awhile)

Absolutely!
And that would also mean that properties would be way more expansive, so that getting loan is actually useful. Same for "endgame" weaponry and armor.

I always loved Daggerfall's banking. Getting a loan to buy myself a cheap house then working to repay it. (Or fleeing to another province with the money... :goodjob: )

On another, calmer, more thoughtful note (you say banks, I mindlessly and instinctively scream yes), the landmass of this game needs to be bigger, while we're at it, in my opinion. I don't want anything Daggerfall-sized, but I want to see a bit more regional division and a sort of scale to really bring back that Daggerfall bank, house-buying, and ship-sailing feeling. I really want the ships back as well as the loans, regional sectionalism (also pertaining to the banking system), and some larger cities to allow a bit more choice in house selection.

Yes I would like a bank, but not one with crazy interest that breaks the game or makes it too easy.

I'd also like items to be not totally safe when stored in houses and chests and a bank would have a vault that is 100% safe but costs money to store items there.

Banks would be great targets for thieves also with lots of guards and a vault full of goodies :ninja:

WTF is a bank?! Some sort of money system? But, I keep all of my gold in my mattress! Lumpy as hell, but secure :P

I'd like banks.

Yes, yes, yes.
There is nothing more demoralizing to my character than having sooo much gold in my inventory that I no longer bother picking up valuable loot or ever bother checking a chest/corpse.

Really though, if there are banks, banks can be robbed in game. I think that can add a wide factor into the system.

There are going to be a lot of dead bodies at my bank of choice...

I definitely support banks. At the very least, they would be a great asset toward actually having some kind of sane economy by helping with the managing of large purchases, to allow for more sensible comparative prices of lesser items.

Yes please, and a merchant's guild too.

What I don't want, however, is a ridiculous Fable-style economy. My character, no matter how rich he/she is, should not be the owner of Skyrim.

I love the idea of banks, as an in-game usefulness, I just don't like the modernity of the concept of a "bank." I'm guessing most loan agreements, in historic cases, were through an individual or group of individuals, rather than a storefront for a government run financial institution. But, they had something like that in Daggerfall, so it's within the lore I guess. Somebody who went to Sunday School needs to refresh me about what the Old Testament had to say about money changers in the temples or something.

Modern banking essentially originated with the Knights Templar of crusades fame. They would loan money and such, and indeed held credit on many very powerful people, including Phillip IV of France, who was responsible for the collapse of the order.

I think that banking, as it was in Daggerfall, would be a fine feature to have. One thing that would be neat to have as a feature would be the ability to finance business ventures such as a store or shipment. This would add an element of risk to the money-system since the factors that control what happens to your investment would be (very likely) largely out of your control.

Banks were great in Daggerfall, but it's kinda hard for me to imagine them in Skyrim(the province).

Why? Skyrim is old, powerful, and wealthy.

Hell yeah!

I think they should do it a bit like Runescape...where any money you have on you is lost when you die, so it's better to keep the majority of it in the bank!

I just think they would be a good feature for when my house get's all filled up. All my houses in MW and Oblivion got full. So a bank would be Great. :intergalactic:

Banks should be in, as should interest and the ability to break into banks and rob them, stealthily or violently and loudly.
