Bastard Swords

For the same reasons I don't want a medium armor skill, I don't want bastard swords.

What reasons? I love medium armor.

Best weapon type ever, who wants to see it in skyrim?

You mean a claymore?

Yeah I think they'll be in probably.

Meh, claymore is just the Scottish term for a great sword. Other than it's cool sounding name, it's not really any different from any other great sword. Unless you're referring to the other claymore, in which case it's just the Scottish variation of the schiavona.

Well I'm not one for details when it comes to weapons, but I'm sure will have plenty of big ass swords.

Great swords are what we had in Oblivion. They were definitely not big enough to be zweihanders.

If we had bastard swords in Skyrim, It'd be a sword we could switch between one hand or two hand. That would undoubtedly cause issues for the skill system, since it would fall under both, depending on how you were using it at the moment.

I think if they added it, they would put in under the 2 hand skill. Whether or not it is actually correct.

I've already contributed a valid reason for why bastard swords will not be in Skyrim, which is more than I can say for you. This thread was spam to begin with. Go play mod somewhere else. It's pathetic trying to defend the topic at hand.

Sure. I'd like them. They could be a longer reach, slightly slower version of a longsword.

Besides having a long-longsword is more my style than having a sword that can be used as a walking stick if need be...

As for the debate as to whether or not bastard swords are worth adding: they bridge the gap between a longsword and a claymore the same way a shortsword does the gap between a dagger and a longsword and yet we have those. They're just as useless, following the same logic, and serve only to put longswords higher up in levelled loot lists than necessary.

I love bastard swords...I own an albion one and it is my favorite weapon for Mount and Blade.

However, I am not sure if it fits Skyrim for two reasons:
1. It doesn't fit the Nord theme
*2. It would require training in two skills (1 hand and 2 hand), making them of limited value for most players.

If this were oblivion and there was merely a Blades skill, I would support it 100%, but Skyrim's proposed mechanics make it questionable.

Nevertheless, I like the weapons and like options too. Also, I agree with what someone said eariler about making sure you can't wield two of them at once...that is not what they are meant for and would be very awkward in real life.

Sure, a reason that could be applied to axes, maces, longswords, claymores, toothpicks, hamsters, or just about anything else you can think of.

Imagine, though, if you had the ability to switch between one handed mode and two handed mode. In one handed mode you have your shield out for greater defense, then sling your shield over your back and switch to two hands for greater power.

Why don't you take your horned orcs and non-bastard-sword-opinion elsewhere. I think it would be nice with something in between longsword and Claymore. It would be nice just like spears and crossbows. (and throwing weapons).

so you can have your opinion but he can't? nice

and almost every thread on this page is useless (including and especially this one) because if the devs stop what they are doing in response to every 'wouldn't it be great if this were in the game' thread, the game would never be released. so, as it relates to skyrim, unless a full list of weapons has been released isn't it just a little too speculative to discuss what we'd like and what we wouldn't? isn't everyone just getting their hopes up only to have them dashed when the 1 little thing they wanted in the game isn't there?

YES!

And his argument isn't really a good one.

Actually, if you look at his posts after his initial argument, which wasn't very good because it could be applied to just about anything (longswords are insignificant to Skyrim, so should not be included), he stopped contributing to this thread. His posts have been more off-topic and disruptive.

Lmao, I do have my horned orc ideas elsewhere bud. It's called another thread. ;)

Is that you agreeing with me or disagreeing? I don't see your point. Bethesda has chosen a rather traditional armament for TES and there is nothing wrong with it. I doubt we will see any new classes of weapons such as bastard swords. Of course, I could always be wrong.

Don't get me wrong Mitheldh, I would like to see them in too...its just that the game mechanics (if implemented right) would make it a difficult weapon to master. A 1-hand specialist can use swords, a 2-hand specialist can use great swords...but a bastard sword, by its name and nature, falls in between. So, unless you are skilled in both, the weapon would be at a disadvantage (unless you use it purely so you can use a shield to get close to a ranged enemy).

actually his initial response is the only decent response in the entire thread. check the page 1 of the forum. almost every thread is 'we should have this or that' in the game. does everyone expect the devs to stop developing and try to implement all these idea's? if so the game will never come out. let them develop and release it. if something you want isn't in the game when it's released, get out your handy dandy construction set and go to work.

Agreeing? No. It's me calling that a really bad argument against bastard swords because it is so vague it could be applied to anything. So by that reasoning, there should be very little in the game except dragons and a dovakhiin.

@Wulfgar_White_Eye - Difficult to master, but ultimately stronger because of it's versatility.

I think it's disagreeing, but I don't know. And bastard swords aren't really a new class of weapons, polearms are. (even though they were in morrowind. wich makes them an old class, but since they were removed in oblivion thy become new again.)

And if we have dragons why shouldn't we have http://www.musesrealm.net/deities/creatures.html as well.

How about throwing in rapiers while we are at it? Fencing mini-game... Hmm maybe not. Maybe just have more variety in weapons in general, or even have weapons that are only avaliable for use at a certain strength level.

Perhaps it would be a bad arguement if Skyrim didn't already have a list of preset weapons that were to be included from previous installments. If you believe bastard swords will be in the game, good for you. I don't and I think it's silly to request random features such as this.
