Bathing

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:09 pm

Should players have to wash every now and then to keep their character clean? If you don't wash enough people's disposition might go down and it could be easier to get diseases! And in dirtier areas you could have to wash more often!

Wow that would svck. I didn't like Heavy Rain, I'll freely admit. I made my way through most of it and then looked up the ending because I was so tired of "controlling a movie". But you know what the dumbest parts were? Brushing teeth and bathing. Least FUN thing I ever had to do in a game. Outside of a few truly evil things I had to do in God of War... some of those weren't fun.

First, thank you!
Just the other day I predicted but couldn't pinppoint an exception to the The-more-realism-the-better rule to which i susbcribe. You have just provided one.
No.
Even though Skyrim isn't earthly, you should bear in mind personal hygiene standards were almost nonexistent in medieval times.
So pervasisve was the stench it became transparent. Thus nobody noticed it.

I like the idea...people don't have to use it, I'd be happy to see it implemented.

You can always create a script that would lower everybody's disposition towards you depending on your sting level.

Well yes thats will work, but token scripting will take more resources then changing of personality of one actor what will affect starting disposition of NPC, then dynamically change disposition of all NPC in cell for reaction on sting level of character by adding tokens to them, since dialogues not work anymore in MenuMode changes must be done in realtime, another thing before we can make scripted disease what will drain Personality and player can simple check stage at status tab or at attribute tab, if there will be no attributes to show this as well disease can be also axed from game because most of them affect attributes
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Diseases
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Diseases
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Disease
How player will able easy check level of %PCname sting?
And yes speechcraft is not affected by sting level, because you can have silver tongue and hideous appearance, as well you cant without personality what represent beauty and charisma make classy clothes for character.
Well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2_8U2mSeDE but it never will look like this ridding in RDR or M&B if sufficient basis will be axed from game.

Bethesda are adding more role playing elements to the game - as they realize a significant proportion of their fan base enjoy crafting mods and doing things in the game world other than dungeon crawling - especially those who have a character for more than 3 months.

I would like to see bath houses available in the game or have the ability to craft soap that does raise disposition - I'm not sure i would care for game play that forced me to do mundane things like eat or wash my clothes - when playing the game I normally roleplay getting clean by going for a swim in a river, pool or sea - but that's only if I want to do it not because the game forced me to do it.

Still I enjoyed Korana's Pelagiad Bathhouse mod for Morrowind where you could buy soaps, towels and even baths for your Morrowind homes.

The Sims Medieval nailed it. There aren't any negative penalties for not taking bath ever, because, frankly, everything and everyone in medieval time stank. But, IF you are taking a bath, then you are gaining small but noticeable positive buff for a while.

Why not? Take bath — get temporary +5-10 to speechcraft. Bath could be not animated, but modders can even turn it to minigame. And they would.

I believe we should also have to drink, and use the bathroom based on when we eat and drink, and how often, and wash our hands before eating, or we'll get a disease, and people can break into our house and steal our posessions anytime we are not there, and we should only be able to carry what we realistically could, and standing outside on a sunny day too long will give us sunburn, and standing in the cold too long will give us a cold, possibly pneumonia, and you can also get cancer, which you can never recover from due to lack of surgical technology and knowledge, and days should pass in real time, and you have no more strength than a real human, and no magic, and Skyrim should be the size of the USA.

I agree with anything that is underlined and the italic part I will remind you that how strong you can get in TES is different from how strong you can get in real life (just like how strong you can get in Dragonball is different from how strong you can get in real life).

Khajits should have a button dedicated to being able to lick themselves, as cats hate water and so wouldn't bathe. Don't want to break MY IMMERSION

I actually like any such ideas if they're not overdone. You should never get a direct penalty for not being clean. But you could potentially get some minor benefit, similar to "Well Rested", that made you slightly more charismatic or whatever. That would be realistic but at the same time not be necessary to do for those of us who don't wanna do it.

Haha, yes! I really want to see it in.

Though I honestly doubt Nords do ever have a bath.

Hmm, bathing, huh?

Here are my thoughts on bathing: Enjoyable in real life, AWESOME with a certain special someone, and definitely NOT fun or interesting in any way for a videogame.

See the Sims to understand why that is so.

We know from the trailer that blood will splatter the player during combat . . . so why not make this blood persistent (instead of having it fade away in a few seconds, like it does in FO3)? Then make it so that the only way to remove it is by a bath/swim. When you are blood-covered, people should treat you a bit differently.

BTW: There is actually a http://amito.freehostia.com/Oblivion/OB-mods-Part3.htm#Bathing available for Oblivion.
